Senators have raised concerns over the recent upward review of the country’s debt ceiling that now stands at Ksh 10 trillion. In a motion seeking to have the Senate approve the debt ceiling approved by the National Assembly last week, Senators cautioned against acute borrowing arguing the country must ensure debt sustainability. During debate on the country’s debt ceiling, the Senators poked holes into the approval by the National Assembly. While a section of Senators argued the adjustment was necessary to finance the country’s development budget others opposed the move saying the tax burden will be heavier on Kenyans. At the same time, the Senators called for proper use of Ksh 6.9 billion set for release to 34 counties as additional grants 15 days to the end of the financial year.
