José Mourinho returned to coaching Portuguese football for the first time in 21 years when he joined Benfica in September 2025. Currently, Benfica sits third in Liga Portugal, seven points behind FC Porto and two points behind Sporting CP. Despite being the only unbeaten team in the Primeira Liga this season, Benfica’s recent 1-1 draw with Casa Pia has left them trailing in the title race.

Mourinho’s contract with Benfica runs until June 2027, but it contains a clause that allows him to leave this summer. Following the draw against Casa Pia, Mourinho expressed his desire to continue coaching Benfica next season, even though their title hopes appear to be effectively ended. He stated, “I would like to continue at Benfica.”

In his assessment of the current situation, Mourinho noted, “We’re no longer in control of our own destiny when it comes to finishing second.” He emphasized that even if Benfica were to win all their remaining games, they would still depend on Sporting CP dropping points to secure a second-place finish. This situation has raised concerns about the team’s future direction.

Mourinho also indicated a need to rethink player selections, mentioning that he wanted to stop playing some players due to higher values at stake. His comments reflect a strategic shift as the season progresses, focusing on long-term goals rather than immediate results.

As the season continues, observers are keen to see how Benfica will navigate the challenges ahead. With the title race slipping away, the focus may shift to securing a strong finish in the league and preparing for the next season under Mourinho’s leadership.
