INEOS Energy’s partnership with Shell Offshore Inc. marks a significant step in expanding their upstream portfolio in the Gulf of America. The companies agreed to jointly invest in exploration and development opportunities, which include several promising projects.

Key facts:

INEOS is acquiring a 21% working interest in the project.

The agreement focuses on three exploration and production opportunities: Shell’s pre-FID Fort Sumter discovery, drilling of the Sisco exploration well, and a further exploration well targeted by the end of 2030.

David Bucknall is the CEO of INEOS Energy.

Before this partnership, expectations centered around limited growth in the region. Yet, this new collaboration signals a shift toward increased activity. Shell expects global demand for liquefied natural gas to grow by at least 45% by 2050 from 2025 levels.

The anticipated increase in LNG demand comes as the market is poised to be oversupplied. Shell’s LNG demand forecast ranges between 610 million to 780 million annually by mid-century. This growth aligns with broader trends in energy security and diversification.

David Bucknall stated, “Partnering with Shell on these opportunities is a natural step.” This sentiment reflects confidence in leveraging combined resources for exploration and production.

The Appomattox platform plays a crucial role in this strategy. It represents a key asset for future projects aimed at tapping into East Mediterranean gas reserves. The collaboration could redefine energy dynamics in the Gulf region.

The Nairobi Southern Bypass will be closed for six hours on Sunday, May 10, 2026, to facilitate the smooth running of the 2026 Nairobi Marathon. The closure will occur from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm, affecting a section between the Ole Sereni Interchange and the Lang’ata Road Interchange.

This road closure aims to ensure public safety during the marathon event. Motorists are advised to use Mombasa Road (A8) as an alternative route during this period. The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has urged road users to cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals at the scene.

Key facts about the road closure:

Affected stretch: Ole Sereni Interchange to Lang’ata Road Interchange

Closure duration: 6 hours

Alternative route: Mombasa Road (A8)

The Nairobi Marathon is an annual event that attracts thousands of participants. It features a full marathon, half-marathon, 10-kilometre, and 5-kilometre races. This event promotes fitness, tourism, and community engagement.

<pMotorists should plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time due to expected traffic disruptions. The closure reflects a common practice in Nairobi, where major sporting events often require adjustments to traffic flow.

INEOS Energy and Shell have formed a partnership to enhance energy security through new exploration opportunities in the Gulf of America.

INEOS Energy and Shell Offshore Inc. agreed to jointly invest in exploration and development opportunities in the Gulf of America. This partnership aims to enhance energy security through new oil and gas exploration initiatives.

INEOS is acquiring a 21% working interest in the Appomattox area. The agreement focuses on three key exploration and production opportunities: Shell’s Fort Sumter discovery, drilling of the Sisco exploration well, and a further well targeted by the end of 2030.

Additionally, ADNOC is in advanced negotiations to buy Shell’s downstream fuel business in South Africa for approximately $1 billion. This transaction would cover about 600 petrol stations, which is roughly 10% of the national fuel retail market in South Africa.

Shell has been shrinking its global downstream footprint for over a decade. The company previously made sales in Africa and Australia. Currently, Shell’s integrated gas production is expected to fall to around 880,000–920,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day due to disruptions in Qatar.

In another significant move, Shell announced a $16.4 billion acquisition of Canadian shale producer ARC Resources to boost long-term production growth. Higher crude prices typically translate directly into stronger profitability across its upstream division.

David Bucknall, CEO of INEOS Energy, stated, “Partnering with Shell on these opportunities is a natural step.” A deal with ADNOC could close quickly; however, neither side has formally confirmed an agreement yet.

The exact amount of investment by INEOS in the Appomattox area remains undisclosed. Furthermore, no timeline has been shared regarding the closing of the ADNOC-Shell deal.

Motorists in Nairobi are experiencing fuel shortages linked to delays at the Port of Mombasa. Government officials assure sufficient stocks are available.

Motorists in Nairobi are facing unprecedented fuel shortages due to clearance delays at the Port of Mombasa, despite government assurances of sufficient stocks. Long queues form at petrol stations as supplies dwindle.

Fuel shortages have been linked to logistical hitches and delays in clearing fuel cargo vessels at the port. Several vessels carrying petrol and diesel faced delays over the weekend due to clearance issues with the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

These delays affected the offloading process at the port, creating a backlog of fuel shipments awaiting entry into the country’s distribution system. Consequently, depots have received reduced volumes, directly impacting availability at petrol stations.

The clearance challenges stem from documentation and compliance requirements, including certification of imported fuel cargo prior to discharge. Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, assured that Kenya has sufficient petroleum stocks to meet current demand.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi revealed that Kenya will have a steady supply of fuel after facilitating a G2G convention. President William Ruto announced that Kenya secured a fuel supply deal amid the Middle East crisis.

The situation has triggered panic buying, further straining already limited supplies and worsening congestion at fuel stations across the city. Kenyans have reacted on social media, blaming the government for discrepancies between assurances and reality at the pumps.

No timeline has been shared regarding when normal operations will resume at the port. As it stands, motorists remain anxious as they navigate ongoing shortages.

A crippling fuel shortage has gripped Nairobi, leaving motorists stranded and disrupting transport operations. At the same time, fuel prices in the United States have reached their highest levels in almost four years.

The average price for 95 octane unleaded petrol in the US has increased by more than 40 percent since February. The spike comes as the US-Israeli war on Iran has disrupted oil exports through the Strait of Hormuz. Before the conflict, gasoline prices averaged about 87 US cents per litre.

By the end of April, diesel prices in the US stood at 196.11 cents per litre. In Australia, the average price for a litre of unleaded petrol is 185.4 cents, reflecting a reduction due to the federal government’s halving of the fuel excise. Diesel prices there have decreased from a peak of 328.4 cents to 260 cents.

The inflation rate in Australia rose to 4.6 percent in March, partly due to automotive fuel prices. Experts suggest that tight supply is affecting even major exporters like Australia.

Expert opinions:

Ben Fahimnia noted that many cities have recently experienced a downward phase, allowing pump prices to fall despite rising upstream costs.

Peter Robertson explained that the US was less reliant on oil imports, which prevented significant price spikes compared to Australia.

Lurion De Mello warned that tight supply is putting pressure on fuel prices globally.

The situation remains fluid as officials monitor developments. Prices are likely to increase in June when the fuel excise cut expires and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continues.

A Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker declared an in-flight emergency over the Arabian Gulf on May 5, 2026. The aircraft transmitted a 7700-squawk code indicating a general emergency. It subsequently vanished from civilian radar.

The aircraft changed course and descended toward Qatar after the emergency declaration. Flight tracking data showed it flying in a circular pattern before losing its signal. The US military has not confirmed the cause of the emergency or the aircraft’s status.

The KC-135 Stratotanker is crucial for aerial refueling and can also carry cargo and passengers. It departed from Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates prior to declaring an emergency.

Key facts:

The aircraft transmitted a distress signal using a 7700 code.

It was observed changing course approximately one hour after the initial emergency declaration.

The status of the crew remains unknown.

The situation raises concerns amid heightened tensions in the Persian Gulf, particularly regarding military operations involving Iran. No official confirmation has been provided regarding any hostile activity related to this incident.

The combination of an emergency code and a sudden signal is concerning, according to Gulf News. However, it remains unclear if the aircraft crashed or if its transponder was intentionally disabled for security reasons.

Internship postings are declining, highlighting the challenges faced by students in securing summer positions. 41% of Class of 2025 students had applied to at least one internship through Handshake, a significant drop from 34% of Class of 2023 students who applied by graduation.

The job market appears bleak for many graduates. Internship postings are decreasing for summer 2026, leading to concerns about the availability of opportunities. The Burwell Career Center at the University of Denver provides resources like job portals and resume building to assist students.

Angel Lupian Alvarez is a first-generation student graduating with a bachelor of science in accounting and an internship position at Ernst & Young. He previously completed an internship at Charles Schwab, gaining valuable experience in the finance industry. Lupian plans to pursue a master’s in accounting from CU Denver through the 4+1 program.

Lupian’s journey reflects broader trends among first-generation students navigating the competitive landscape of internships. He credits his professor, Cynthia Kennedy, for encouraging him to consider accounting over finance. “I walk into those rooms knowing that I belong there,” he said.

Challenges persist as many students seek to enhance their skills through internships. Orell noted, “You can never have enough experience, even for entry level, because entry level is not entry level anymore.” This sentiment resonates with many who feel pressure to stand out in a crowded job market.

Despite these hurdles, networking events and career fairs remain crucial for connecting students with potential employers. Organizations like TRIO Student Support Services aim to support these efforts by offering mentoring and guidance.

The future remains uncertain as internship opportunities continue to dwindle. Students must adapt to this evolving landscape while seeking ways to build their professional networks and gain essential experience.

Kenya's passport issuance fell significantly in 2025, marking the lowest level since 2021. Government efforts to modernize the system have not yielded expected results.

The post Passport: Kenya’s Issuance Hits Four-Year Low appeared first on newskenya.

Despite government efforts to modernize the passport system, Kenya’s passport issuance dropped to a four-year low in 2025. The country issued 393,567 passports, a significant decline from the previous year.

In 2024, Kenya issued 621,794 passports. This represents a 36.7% decline in passport issuance. The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has not provided explanations for this drop.

The Kenyan government invested in modernizing the passport production system and expanding service points to ease pressure on the main immigration office. Yet, these initiatives did not translate into increased passport processing efficiency.

In contrast, the U.S. State Department reported over 7.3 million passports issued through its online system as of 2024. Users rated the online passport renewal tool positively—94% expressed satisfaction in government surveys.

The online renewal process now takes only 20 minutes, down from 40 minutes with the old method. This efficiency showcases how digital solutions can enhance government services.

The U.S. is also exploring digital travel credentials, often referred to as a “digital passport.” Matt Pierce noted, “A lot of people call it the digital passport, but it’s different from the ID that digital wallet users can create with a passport.”

The decline in Kenya’s passport issuance raises questions about demand and processing challenges. Officials have not confirmed whether lower demand or continued inefficiencies contributed to this situation.

The current state of Kenya’s passport system reflects ongoing challenges amid modernization efforts. The future remains uncertain as stakeholders seek solutions to improve government efficiency and meet citizen needs.

The PM Internship Scheme has dramatically underperformed, with only 10,000 internships completed out of 2.45 lakh offered over the last two years. This shortfall raises serious concerns about its implementation and impact.

Key statistics:

The scheme aims to provide internship opportunities to one crore youth over five years.

Only 10,000 internships were completed from the total offered.

Only 1.5% of the allocated budget was utilized in FY 2024-25.

The PM Internship Scheme was introduced to address youth unemployment and enhance skills among young people. However, the low completion rate indicates significant challenges in execution. The Teachers Service Commission has also faced legal challenges regarding its internship program’s constitutionality.

Currently, over 44,000 teacher interns are deployed in public schools across the country. Despite these efforts, chronic staffing shortages remain an issue. The need for effective environmental governance and sustainable development is pressing as the nation grapples with these challenges.

John Brittas criticized the scheme’s performance, stating, “This is appalling. Prime Minister Modi owes the country a clear answer for this gross underutilisation of a wildly hyped scheme announced with much fanfare in the last Budget.” His remarks reflect widespread frustration among stakeholders regarding the lack of transparency and accountability in the program.

As the application deadline for an internship position within the United Nations Environment Programme approaches on May 6, 2026, many are looking for alternative opportunities that may better serve their career aspirations.
