Court extends orders stopping Moses Kuria from gazetting Ezekiel Otieno as EPZA CEO

High court has extended orders temporarily stopping Industrialization Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria from gazetting Ezekiel Otieno as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) until further orders of the court.

Similarly, Justice Mugure Thande consolidated the three cases that have been filed in court challenging the gazettment of Otieno.

40 Jordanian tourists arrested for begging in the streets of Mombasa

Police in Mombasa have detained 40 Jordanian tourists after they were spotted begging on the city's streets.

The tourists were reportedly seen begging on the streets of Old Town and Marikiti Market on Thursday in order to raise funds for their trip to Nairobi.

Mr Maxwell Agoro, the Mvita Sub-county Police Commander, confirmed the arrest, saying the police went to arrest the tourists after receiving a tip from locals.

The foreigners, 19 adults and 21 children, had valid tourist visas, but begging violated the terms of their travel documents, leading to their arrest, according to Agoro.

Consumers face more pain as KRA adjusts excise rates

Fuel, alcohol and soft drinks are set for another round of price increase as Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) prepares to implement inflationary adjustments on various excisable goods and services beginning October 1.

The taxman is seeking to increase specific rates of excise duty by 6.3 per cent which represents the average inflation rate recorded in the last 2021/2022 financial year to cushion the government’s revenues from being eroded by imported inflation.

Government to tame speeding motorists along Nairobi Expressway

The Government is set to roll out additional measures to tame speeding motorists along the Nairobi Expressway.

Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna on Sunday announced that plans are underway to implement new enforcement measures to ensure adherence to the 80km/h speed limit on the expressway.

KRA expects to exceed revenue target by Ksh.140 billion

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) expects to exceed its revenue collection target for the current fiscal year 2021/2022 by up to Ksh.140 billion.

The National Treasury budget documents as of March 2022 showed that the revenue body was ahead of its targets in the VAT and income tax categories by Ksh.10.8 billion and Ksh.17.8 billion respectively.

The 2021/2022 budget had set an ordinary revenue target of Ksh.1.77 trillion for the KRA, which was then revised to Ksh.1.8 trillion in the 2022 budget policy statement.

IEBC Responds To Queries On Raila’s Degree

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has addressed emerging concerns on Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s degree.

In an interview on NTV, the commissions CEO Hussein Marjan said that IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati assessed Raila’s academic documents and was satisfied with them.

“By the time Chebukati was clearing him (Raila) he had certified that the candidate had met all the requirements. Raila Odinga met the requirements,” Hussein said.

The CEO was responding to a caller who wanted clarity on the validity of Raila Odinga’s degree certificate.

Britain pressed on with its strategy of deporting asylum seekers to Rwanda on Wednesday and is planning further flights despite a last-minute intervention by European judges that grounded the first plane minutes before it was due to depart.
