What impact will the launch of Wingu Cloud Exchange have on the Ethiopian business landscape? Wingu Africa has introduced Wingu Cloud Exchange in Ethiopia, a platform designed to deliver secure, compliant, and scalable cloud solutions tailored to local needs. Demos Kyriacou, a representative from Wingu Africa, stated, “WCX is a game-changer for African businesses. We are delivering secure, compliant and scalable cloud solutions built specifically for local needs.” This initiative aims to enhance the technological infrastructure available to businesses in the region.

However, the launch of this cloud service coincides with troubling financial reports from the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund, which has raised concerns about transparency and accountability in public health financing. The fund reported a total income of KSh 6.5 billion, but KSh 5.3 billion of this amount could not be reconciled with supporting documentation. Furthermore, KSh 6.34 billion in payments could not be verified due to missing claims records, invoices, and schedules.

In addition, KSh 994 million in payments was identified that could not be linked to any verifiable claims, contracts, or supporting documentation. These discrepancies highlight significant issues within the fund’s operational framework, which has been criticized for lacking a comprehensive policy governing benefits, claims processing, eligibility criteria, and provider payments. Audits have indicated that over KES 4.2 billion in expenditures lack sufficient supporting documentation.

Moreover, nearly KES 850 million was disbursed to medical facilities without corresponding service delivery reports, raising questions about the effectiveness of the fund’s management. Administrative processing times for critical health interventions have increased by 45% compared to the previous fiscal year, further complicating the healthcare landscape in Ethiopia.

The Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund operates within the new Social Health Authority architecture, which is designed to reorganize public-sector medical cover for 123,728 principal members into a centralized universal health system. However, the integrity of both income and expenditure streams remains uncertain due to inconsistent and unreliable membership data. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the effectiveness of the new Social Health Insurance Fund in addressing the issues of the previous scheme.

As Wingu Cloud Exchange aims to provide innovative solutions for businesses, the ongoing financial discrepancies within the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund underscore the need for improved governance and accountability in public health financing. The juxtaposition of these developments highlights the challenges faced by the Ethiopian government in ensuring both technological advancement and financial integrity in its public health sector.

Moving forward, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the impact of Wingu Cloud Exchange on local businesses, as well as the efforts to rectify the financial issues within the Public Officers Medical Scheme Fund. The outcomes of these initiatives could significantly influence the future of healthcare and technology in Ethiopia.

“From the moment I first joined this event, I knew it was an experience I never wanted to miss. The sense of unity and camaraderie that pervades the atmosphere here is truly the heart of this run,” said Kekron Asfaw, a two-time winner of the Icon Women category at the Safaricom Women First 5km. This year, the event took place on March 29, 2026, in Bole, Ethiopia, and attracted over 16,000 registered participants, making it one of the largest women’s-only road races in Africa.

The race, which included over 150 elite female athletes, aimed to promote messages celebrating women’s contributions to Ethiopia’s development. Asfaw’s sentiments reflect the spirit of the event, which has become a significant platform for raising awareness about various issues affecting women, including health and family planning.

In 2026, the race’s theme was “Live Smart Run Confident,” focusing on the importance of family planning. The event not only encourages physical fitness but also serves as a rallying point for women to come together and support one another in their health journeys. Meseret Defar, a two-time Olympic gold medallist, served as the race ambassador and emphasized the importance of consistent training among participants.

“Mesi’s sub-35 minute challenge aims to incentivise participants to run consistently throughout the year,” Defar explained, highlighting the race’s commitment to fostering a culture of health and fitness among women. This year, the winner of the race received a prize of 100,000 Ethiopian birr, the highest-ever individual prize in the race’s history, further motivating participants.

Birnesh Deseie, who won the race last year, successfully defended her title, showcasing her remarkable talent and determination. The event also saw Kekron Asfaw winning the Icon Women category for the second time, reinforcing her status as a leading athlete in the women’s running community.

The Safaricom Women First 5km has been held annually around International Women’s Day, emphasizing the importance of women’s empowerment and health. Over the years, it has grown in participation and significance, becoming a symbol of strength and resilience for women in Ethiopia.

As the event concluded, participants and organizers alike expressed their commitment to continuing this tradition of empowerment and awareness. The success of the race this year sets a hopeful tone for future events, with expectations for even greater participation and impact in the years to come.

The World Bank has announced a 21-month debarment of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in Mauritius, Kenya, and Rwanda due to collusive and fraudulent practices related to the Eastern Electricity Highway Project in Ethiopia. This sanction prohibits PwC and its affiliates from participating in any World Bank-financed projects during this period.

The debarment stems from findings that PwC units obtained confidential procurement information from project officials in 2019, which they used to improperly influence contract awards. The Eastern Electricity Highway Project, valued at approximately $1.1 billion, is part of the Eastern Africa Power Integration Program, aimed at enhancing electricity supply in Kenya while generating revenue for Ethiopia through power exports.

The World Bank stated, “This conduct constitutes collusive and fraudulent practices under the Bank Group Consultant Guidelines.” Furthermore, the firms involved admitted culpability and have agreed to undertake remedial actions, including internal investigations and staff training.

In light of the companies’ admission of misconduct, the settlement agreement provides for a reduced period of debarment. The Eastern Africa Power Integration Program seeks to reduce reliance on expensive thermal power plants in Kenya by importing cleaner, cheaper hydroelectric power from Ethiopia.

This debarment may also be enforced by other multilateral development banks under a mutual recognition agreement, potentially impacting PwC’s operations beyond the World Bank’s jurisdiction. Observers are closely monitoring the situation as the implications of this debarment unfold in the region.
