In contrast, the U.S. State Department reported over 7.3 million passports issued through its online system as of 2024. Users rated the online passport renewal tool positively—94% expressed satisfaction in government surveys.

The online renewal process now takes only 20 minutes, down from 40 minutes with the old method. This efficiency showcases how digital solutions can enhance government services.

The U.S. is also exploring digital travel credentials, often referred to as a “digital passport.” Matt Pierce noted, “A lot of people call it the digital passport, but it’s different from the ID that digital wallet users can create with a passport.”
