In Mwanza Region, Tanzania, 82 employers were taken to court for failing to remit employees’ contributions to the National Social Security Fund (NSSF). The legal action highlights serious challenges retirees face regarding their benefits.

The employers owe a total of 3.8 billion Tanzanian Shillings. Of the cases brought forward, 54 have been concluded, while 28 remain pending. Through this operation, authorities collected 921.1 million Tanzanian Shillings.

This initiative aims to enforce compliance with social security laws. Directors who neglect their responsibilities will face arrest. An 82-year-old woman has not received her pension for over ten years because of unsubmitted contributions.

Key facts:

82 employers taken to court for non-compliance.

Total debt owed: 3.8 billion Tanzanian Shillings.

921.1 million Tanzanian Shillings collected so far.

Mr Said Mtanda, the Mwanza Regional Commissioner, stated, “Directors who fail to submit employees’ contributions will be arrested because no one is above the law.” He further noted, “If contributions are not submitted, retirees face serious challenges.” This reflects a broader effort to ensure that workers’ rights are upheld.

Mrs Lucy Nyanda emphasized the impact of this situation on families, saying, “Our students are studying while hungry. During this Workers’ Day period, parents should make an effort to contribute food for students at school.” Meanwhile, Mr Egbert Ngowo highlighted the importance of timely collection of contributions for member satisfaction.

For the first time since independence, Kenya’s Labour Day celebrations are being held outside Nairobi, specifically at Chavakali High School in Vihiga County. This significant event takes place on May 1, 2026, and aims to recognize the contributions of workers across the nation.

The celebrations will be led by President William Ruto, who is expected to address key labour issues. Security measures have been intensified at the venue to manage access and ensure order during the event. Kenyans began arriving as early as 4:00 AM to participate in the festivities.

This year’s Labour Day commemorates 61 years of celebrations in Kenya. It provides a platform to discuss workers’ rights, employment conditions, and various economic issues affecting the workforce. The Central Organisation of Trade Unions plays a crucial role in these discussions.

During his address, President Ruto will likely focus on recent economic developments. In 2025, Kenya recorded a GDP growth rate of 4.6%, while agriculture grew at a rate of 2.8%. These figures reflect ongoing efforts to improve the economic landscape for workers.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna delivered a politically charged message during Labour Day, stating, “Hang in there, Zakayo must go.” His remarks highlight ongoing political tensions surrounding workers’ rights and governance.

The decision to hold Labour Day celebrations in Vihiga County marks a departure from tradition. It reflects an effort to decentralize national events and engage more regions in discussions about labour issues.

As the day unfolds, many are eager to see how this shift will impact future Labour Day celebrations across Kenya. The focus on local engagement may lead to broader participation from various communities.

Kenyan workers face significant challenges this Labour Day, as Rigathi Gachagua sharply criticized the government’s handling of their issues. He noted that many workers have little to celebrate due to shrinking incomes and rising taxes.

President William Ruto is expected to lead the Labour Day celebrations in Vihiga County. Meanwhile, COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli mentioned ongoing salary negotiations driven by increasing fuel prices. Labour Day, observed annually, honors workers and acknowledges their contributions to national development.

This year, Labour Day rallies are taking place globally amid concerns over economic conditions exacerbated by the Iran war and rising energy prices. In many countries, these rallies attract large crowds as May 1 is a public holiday.

The International Trade Union Confederation reported alarming trends: many workers are facing potential job cuts while CEOs receive excessive pay. Gachagua expressed that “Today, workers in Kenya gather in pain and disrespect; they stand at the intersection of a mutilated payslip and a dwindling economy.”

Atwoli added that if fuel prices continue to rise, unions will have no choice but to negotiate for better salaries. This situation reflects broader issues of economic justice and workers’ rights that are increasingly relevant during this global recession.

In Gaza, for example, around 550,000 workers currently have no income. This highlights the impact of global economic trends on local labor markets.

The next steps for Kenyan workers remain uncertain as they navigate these challenges. The government’s response and any resolutions from ongoing negotiations will be critical in shaping the future of labor rights in Kenya.

Thailand marks Labour Day 2026 on May 1, honoring the contributions of workers while civil servants remain on duty. This day is recognized as a statutory holiday for private-sector employees but does not apply to civil servants.

Labour Day, also known as International Workers’ Day or May Day, is celebrated globally. It originated from May Day traditions in Europe and gained modern significance in 1886 during protests in the United States advocating for an eight-hour workday.

Key facts:

Labour Day is observed on May 1st to honor the dedication of workers across all professions.

In Thailand, Labour Day 2026 is recognized as a statutory holiday for private-sector employees.

Civil servants in Thailand do not receive Labour Day as an official public holiday.

Labour Day will see a 40% surge in Hong Kong tour groups to mainland China for the weekend.

The celebration underscores the importance of workers’ rights. Many Indian states observe Labour Day as a public holiday, closing government offices and banks. This recognition highlights the global effort to improve conditions for workers.

Yet, uncertainties remain regarding how these changes will impact civil service operations. Officials have not confirmed any adjustments to civil servant duties during this period.

Labour Day celebrations in South Sudan reveal a disconnect between official rhetoric and the harsh realities faced by workers. Salary delays and economic justice remain critical issues.

Labour Day celebrations in South Sudan will take place on May 1, 2026, at Juba National Stadium. The event aims to empower workers while highlighting the ongoing issues of unpaid wages and salary delays.

Public employees in South Sudan face significant hardships. Many have not received their salaries for extended periods. This situation starkly contrasts with the theme of the Labour Day event: ‘Empowering Workers, Developing South Sudan.’

In Kenya, Labour Day celebrations are set for Vihiga, marking the first time these festivities occur outside the capital. The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli confirmed that all key stakeholders will attend. However, employers have rejected calls for a wage increase, urging a 5% cap instead.

Key issues addressed:

Delayed salaries for public employees in South Sudan

The need for fair remuneration as outlined in the Labour Act (2017)

The gap between legal guarantees and actual implementation of workers’ rights

The annual Labour Day event serves as a platform to address critical labour issues. These include workers’ welfare, wages, and employment conditions. Yet, some argue that the theme risks sounding disconnected from reality.

<pWilliam Sunday D. Tor emphasized that honoring workers requires more than speeches or ceremonies. He stated, 'Pay them their wages each day before sunset,' quoting Deuteronomy 24:15. This highlights the urgent need for economic justice.

<pAs Labour Day approaches, reactions from various sectors reflect deep concerns about workers' rights and conditions. The event aims to bridge gaps between rhetoric and reality.
