Liverpool have engaged in preliminary discussions with Paris Saint-Germain regarding the potential transfer of winger Bradley Barcola. However, reports indicate a significant difference in how the two clubs value the player, making a deal difficult to finalise at this stage.
PSG reportedly values Barcola at £145 million. This valuation has been described as a major hurdle in negotiations. Despite the financial gap, a move to Anfield is said to be appealing to Barcola.
Valuation challenges and player interest
The Champions League holders, Liverpool, have held talks with Barcola’s representatives. The French international has two years remaining on his contract with PSG and has indicated he does not intend to sign a new deal, reportedly due to frustrations over a lack of playing time.
Former player Michael Owen commented on the situation, suggesting that PSG may be inflating their financial demands due to Liverpool’s need to replace Mohamed Salah. Salah’s departure to Trabzonspor on a free transfer created a vacancy that Liverpool is actively seeking to fill before the summer transfer window closes.
Owen described the £145 million valuation as “exorbitant and fanciful” for a player who has primarily played in the French league. He noted that while Barcola has played at a high level, such a price tag would be excessive. Owen also highlighted that PSG is not compelled to sell Barcola, as his contract extends until 2028.
Andoni Iraola, Liverpool’s manager, views wide players as crucial to his tactical approach. This focus on wingers is particularly pronounced in his first transfer window at Merseyside, following Salah’s exit. The club aims to have five wingers in the squad by the end of the window, including a younger player for development.
Liverpool’s interest in Barcola is not new, as he has been on their radar for several years. The club’s ability to secure a deal will depend on PSG’s willingness to lower their asking price for the player they acquired from Lyon for approximately in the summer of 2023.
Other potential targets and PSG’s transfer activity
Barcola is not the only PSG winger that Liverpool has shown interest in. The club has also explored the conditions of a deal for Ibrahim Mbaye, an 18-year-old who primarily plays on the right wing. Mbaye is reportedly interested in a move to Anfield. This interest in Mbaye is separate from any potential move for Barcola, and Liverpool could potentially sign Mbaye along with another more experienced option.
PSG recently signed winger Magnes Akliouche from Monaco in a deal. Liverpool had also been interested in Akliouche, but he reportedly preferred to move to PSG, having grown up in the Paris area. PSG is also in advanced discussions with Ajax for winger Mika Godts.
However, the signings of Godts and Akliouche are not seen as replacements for Barcola. PSG ideally wishes to retain Barcola and does not view these new acquisitions as increasing the likelihood of his departure. PSG has already seen three forwards depart this summer: Goncalo Ramos, Randal Kolo Muani, and Kang-In Lee.
Another club, Arsenal, which did not sign Vinicius Junior after his contract extension with Real Madrid, also holds an interest in Barcola.
The situation highlights the complexities of the transfer market, particularly when a club like Liverpool is in urgent need of a top-class player, potentially leading to inflated prices.
