Liverpool have completed the signing of defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan. The deal includes an option for Liverpool to make the move permanent. This transfer provides Liverpool with an experienced defender at a critical time, while offering Araujo an opportunity for a fresh start away from Barcelona.
The Uruguay international arrived in Liverpool after the club’s new head coach, Andoni Iraola, approved the move last week and spoke with Araujo. Araujo has agreed to a pay cut for the upcoming season, and Liverpool will cover his full salary for the duration of his loan spell. He will wear the number 33 shirt for the Premier League side.
Reinforcing the Defence
The structure of the deal reflects Liverpool‘s immediate need for defensive solutions. The club sought a defender capable of playing both as a centre-back and a right-back, and Araujo’s versatility and physical attributes made him a suitable candidate. His leadership qualities were also noted as a positive factor.
The timing of Araujo’s arrival is particularly important due to several injuries within the squad. Conor Bradley, Joe Gomez, and Giovanni Leoni are currently sidelined. Additionally, new signing Jeremy Jacquet has not yet featured in pre-season. With Ibrahima Konate having departed for Real Madrid, Virgil van Dijk is currently Liverpool‘s only fit senior centre-back, highlighting the need for reinforcements.
Liverpool still believes in their emerging centre-back talent, which includes players like Jacquet, Leoni, Mor Talla Ndiaye, and Ifeanyi Ndukwe. However, Araujo, known for his strength, pace, and experience from a top European club, is seen as a player who can help Liverpool navigate this period of defensive challenges.
Araujo’s physical presence, standing at 6ft 4in (1.93m), allowed Barcelona to defend with a high line and made him a formidable opponent in physical and aerial duels. He completed his first training session as a Liverpool player on Monday at the AXA Training Centre, undertaking an initial workout in the gym and on the pitch.
A New Chapter for Araujo
Araujo joined Barcelona in 2018 from his home country of Uruguay, making his first-team debut the following October. He went on to make more than 200 appearances for the Catalan club. He concluded last season as captain, making appearances for Hansi Flick‘s side in the 2025-26 campaign.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona‘s coach, commented on Araujo’s departure, stating, “He is a very good person and an exceptional player, but our style of play is slightly different.” Flick acknowledged Araujo’s speed, power, and ball-playing ability, adding, “I wanted to get him involved; I think he is eager to try new things, and I believe he has also been affected by what happened in the past.”
Flick also mentioned bidding farewell to Araujo, noting that the player seemed happy about the move to Liverpool. The “past” Flick referred to includes instances where Araujo’s mistakes drew scrutiny, such as his red card against Paris St-Germain in the 2024 Champions League quarter-finals, which influenced the tie’s outcome. He was also criticised for errors in the 2025 Champions League semi-final defeat by Inter.
Last season, during Barcelona‘s 3-0 away loss to Chelsea in the Champions League, Araujo was sent off before half-time after receiving a second yellow card. A week later, he was granted a leave of absence to focus on his mental health, receiving professional support. He returned a month later, making 23 appearances in the second half of the season, starting six matches.
For Barcelona, the loan deal offers a financial advantage. The club has been seeking to generate significant sales to alleviate financial pressures. While this is a loan with an option to buy, Liverpool covering Araujo’s full salary represents a notable saving for Barcelona, as he was one of their higher earners. Araujo arrives at Anfield with an opportunity to revitalise his career and regain the confidence that once established him as a highly-regarded defender.
Araujo expressed his excitement about joining Liverpool, stating, “I can’t wait to get started. I’m very, very happy. I’m excited to be here at this massive club with lots of history. I’m excited to meet my team-mates, excited to get started playing, and I’m very motivated and really up for getting going.” He views the move as an ideal and necessary step in his career, stating that interest from Liverpool quickly set things in motion.
The 27-year-old defender signed a new contract with Barcelona last year until 2031.
