Real Madrid has officially signed Ivory Coast international Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig. The transfer fee for the 19-year-old winger is reported to be up to £120m, or 140m euros, with some reports indicating a guaranteed fee of €125m that could rise to €140m with add-ons. Diomande has agreed to a seven-year contract with the Spanish giants, extending until June 2033.
The move makes Diomande potentially the fourth most expensive player in history if the full £120m is paid, placing him behind PSG’s Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, and Liverpool’s Alexander Isak. He also becomes the most expensive African player, surpassing the £72m paid by Arsenal for Nicolas Pepe in 2019. The deal could also exceed the £115m (133.9m euros) Real paid for Jude Bellingham in June 2023.
Diomande’s Journey to Madrid
Diomande’s path to Real Madrid began in his native Ivory Coast before he moved to an academy in the United States. He then joined Spanish side Leganes in 2025 and subsequently moved to RB Leipzig later that year. His rapid ascent saw him score in two of his six appearances for Leganes as they faced relegation from LaLiga.
At RB Leipzig, Diomande quickly made an impact. He was named the Bundesliga’s Young Player of the Season for 2025-26, having scored 12 goals and registered eight assists in the competition. Across all competitions in his first full season in Europe with Leipzig, he scored 13 goals and provided 10 assists.
Diomande also featured in all four of Ivory Coast’s World Cup games, where his team was eliminated in the round of 32 by Norway.
Interest from Top European Clubs
Before joining Real Madrid, Diomande was a target for several major European clubs. Paris St-Germain had been considered frontrunners, but they withdrew their interest after a £102.5m bid was rejected, citing that the “asking transfer fee and salary demands were completely disproportionate and distortive.”
Liverpool had also expressed interest, with an initial bid of £69m rejected in June, as they sought a replacement for Mohamed Salah, who moved to Turkish club Trabzonspor. Premier League clubs Arsenal and Manchester City were also reportedly keen on the winger. Real Madrid had a previous bid of £85.4m (€100m) rejected by Leipzig, who sought a higher fee for the player.

Real Madrid’s decision to sign Diomande aligns with the club’s strategy of acquiring elite young talents. At 19 years old, Diomande is recognised for his explosive pace, dribbling ability, creativity, and overall attacking impact.
His versatility is a significant asset, as he is comfortable playing on either wing. From the left, he can cut inside and threaten goal with his right foot, while from the right, he uses his pace and crossing ability to create opportunities. This flexibility is seen as a strong fit for Real Madrid, who have been looking for greater consistency in the right-wing position. The substantial transfer fee reflects Real Madrid’s belief in Diomande’s potential to become a key player for the club’s future.
Diomande is the sixth summer signing for Real Madrid under new head coach Jose Mourinho, joining Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, Marc Cucurella, and Carlos Espi. Diomande thanked Leipzig fans for their support and expressed that the move to Madrid is a “childhood dream come true.”
He also noted his gratitude to RB Leipzig’s management for facilitating the transfer despite his existing contract. At Leipzig, Diomande formed a strong partnership with right-back Ridle Baku, and his attacking threat could be further enhanced by linking up with experienced full-backs Trent Alexander-Arnold and Cucurella at Real Madrid.
