Middlesbrough is nearing a permanent agreement to sign goalkeeper Radek Vitek from Manchester United. The deal is expected to include a buy-back option for Manchester United, alongside a sell-on clause. This move would see Vitek, who has attracted interest from several clubs, join Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium.
Vitek is set to undergo a medical as part of the transfer process. Reports indicate that Middlesbrough will pay an initial £7m for the player, with the total value of the deal potentially reaching up to £14m. Manchester United is understood to retain a 35 per cent sell-on clause, matching rights for any future bids, and a buy-back option.
The 22-year-old goalkeeper had a successful loan spell last season at Bristol City, where he impressed with his performances. During his time at Bristol City, Vitek secured 12 clean sheets in 41 league appearances. His contributions led to him sweeping the club’s individual awards, including Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year, and Young Player of the Year.
Vitek’s strong campaign at Bristol City meant he was keen to play regular first-team football. Had he remained at Old Trafford, he would have been behind Senne Lammens, who is currently Manchester United’s No 1 goalkeeper. This desire for consistent playing time influenced his decision to pursue a permanent move rather than another loan.
Goalkeeping Department Changes
Manchester United has been active in reshaping its goalkeeping department. The club recently signed Karl Darlow, 35, on a free transfer after his contract with Leeds United expired. This acquisition was made in anticipation of potential changes within the goalkeeping squad.
Another goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, is also expected to depart Manchester United. The Turkish international has drawn interest from several clubs, including Celta Vigo. Bayindir has found first-team opportunities limited, leading to his anticipated loan move to Celta Vigo for the season. The Liga side will have the option to make this move permanent for approximately £3.5m, according to reports.
Vitek featured in Manchester United’s pre-season matches, playing 72 minutes against Rosenborg and 45 minutes against Wrexham. He maintained a clean sheet in both of these appearances. His performances during pre-season further highlighted his capabilities.
The decision by Manchester United to pursue a permanent transfer for Vitek, rather than another loan, was made to recoup funds immediately. The inclusion of a buy-back clause provides the club with future protection should circumstances with Lammens change. Vitek’s move to Middlesbrough offers him the chance to establish himself as the primary goalkeeper at a club aiming for promotion to the Premier League.
Squad Reinforcements and Departures
Manchester United’s manager is focused on both strengthening and streamlining the squad for the upcoming season. The club moved swiftly to sign Andrey Santos from Chelsea last month. Following this, Youri Tielemans joined after Manchester United activated the £35million release clause in his Aston Villa contract.
Several players have also exited Old Trafford. Rasmus Hojlund has joined Napoli after a successful loan period. Additionally, players such as Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia, and Jadon Sancho have all left the club following the expiration of their contracts.
The manager is also reportedly keen to sign a new left-back, as Luke Shaw is currently the only recognised player in that position within the first-team squad. While Lewis Hall is considered a key target, securing a deal for the Newcastle player is described as extremely difficult. Middlesbrough, managed by former Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick between 2022 and 2025, lost the Championship play-off final in May to Hull City.
