Wizards of the Coast admitted to using traced artwork for a key card in their upcoming Magic: The Gathering crossover with The Hobbit. This revelation surfaced during MagicCon: Las Vegas 2026. The company issued a public apology, acknowledging their failure in internal review systems.
The controversy began when artist Dan Frazier admitted to using Marta Nael‘s artwork as a reference. He expressed deep regret, stating, “I made a mistake, and I feel awful. I especially feel for Marta, whose work I adore.” Frazier’s agent confirmed he did not participate in the final iterations of the artwork.
Additionally, artist Donato Giancola accused Wizards of the Coast of using modified digital samples from older art. This claim further fueled criticism surrounding the company’s practices.
Frazier has produced art for 188 cards throughout the game’s history. However, this incident has tarnished his reputation and raised questions about oversight in the creative process.
The company stated they would update digital credits and compensate Nael. They acknowledged that both Frazier and their corporate oversight team shared responsibility for the error. Wizards of the Coast said, “We made mistakes in our process to not catch the error.”
The Hobbit set was initially expected to be a highlight at the reveal event alongside other expansions. Now, it faces scrutiny due to this artwork controversy.
This incident marks a significant moment for Wizards of the Coast as they navigate public backlash and strive to maintain trust within the community.
