Real Madrid’s Official Stance
Real Madrid has officially stated that the club has no intention of pursuing Enzo Fernandez from Chelsea this summer. This declaration comes amidst recent reports linking the Argentina midfielder with a move to the Spanish club. The statement from Real Madrid clarifies that these reports do not align with reality, aiming to dispel any confusion among fans and to uphold institutional loyalty.
The club emphasised that it has not made any direct or indirect efforts to sign Fernandez. Furthermore, Real Madrid expressed its respect for Enzo Fernandez as a footballer and for Chelsea FC, highlighting the excellent institutional relationship between the two clubs. This public denial follows a similar statement issued last month by Real Madrid regarding links to another player.
Chelsea has also confirmed that they have not received any club-to-club approach from Real Madrid concerning Fernandez. While Chelsea values the player at a significant fee should serious interest emerge, they are not actively seeking to sell him and would prefer to retain him as a key player under new coach Xabi Alonso.
Fernandez’s Future at Chelsea
Enzo Fernandez, who was a key figure in Argentina‘s World Cup victory, joined Chelsea in February 2023. He has since contributed to the team’s success in the Europa Conference League and the Club World Cup, scoring 15 goals across all competitions last season. He continues to be an important player for Argentina in the current World Cup tournament.
Despite his importance, there have been indications that Fernandez is open to leaving Stamford Bridge, with a move to the Spanish capital reportedly being his preferred option. His agent, Javier Pastore, has publicly discussed Fernandez‘s future, suggesting that the player is underpaid at Chelsea and that the club’s failure to secure European qualification last season could be a factor in his desire to move.
These comments led to an internal two-match suspension for Fernandez in April, imposed by former boss Liam Rosenior, after the midfielder expressed uncertainty about his future at Chelsea and his desire to live in Madrid. The situation has been described as challenging for Chelsea, given Fernandez‘s role in the team, where he contributed 15 goals and seven assists last season and served as vice-captain.

However, Chelsea maintains that the situation is not irreparable. There is a belief within the club that coach Xabi Alonso can successfully reintegrate Fernandez into the squad and help mend his relationship with supporters through strong performances and results on the pitch. The club has consistently stated its willingness to consider offers only if their valuation is met, but they are not actively looking to offload the player.
Agent’s Perspective on Potential Move
Javier Pastore, Enzo Fernandez‘s legal representative, confirmed that they are exploring options for Fernandez to leave Chelsea. Speaking from an event in Miami, Pastore noted that while Fernandez is currently focused on the World Cup with Argentina, discussions about his club future are ongoing. He mentioned that there is nothing firm or confirmed with any club at this stage.
Pastore also acknowledged Fernandez‘s fondness for Madrid, citing his friendships there and Pastore‘s own residence in the city. He highlighted that Fernandez has adapted well to various positions on the field, performing effectively as both a defensive and central midfielder, and is currently playing a crucial role for the national team in the World Cup.
The public distancing from Real Madrid represents a significant development for Enzo Fernandez and his representatives. Similar signals have reportedly been given privately by sources at Paris St-Germain and Manchester City, both of whom had previously been linked with the midfielder. Real Madrid has already signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea this summer in a deal worth up to £51.8m.
