Bruno Guimaraes has communicated to Newcastle United his wish to depart St James’ Park and join Arsenal. The Premier League champions are reportedly intensifying their pursuit of the midfielder, with indications of a willingness to pay up to £60 million for his services. Reports suggest that Arsenal had a verbal offer, below £60 million, rejected last month.

Newcastle, however, has maintained that they would not consider bids for Guimaraes. There has been no direct contact between the clubs so far, and the North East side is currently holding its position. Guimaraes has two years remaining on his current contract.

Arsenal’s Pursuit and Player Profile

Arsenal’s interest in Guimaraes aligns with their strategy to build on their recent title triumph. Josh Kroenke, co-chair of Arsenal, emphasized the need for continuous evolution and improvement, stating that the project has entered its “win window” and recruitment would reflect this. Leveraging their status as champions, Arsenal aims to attract top talent like Guimaraes, who has expressed his desire for a move to North London.

Guimaraes, who will turn 29 in November, would be among the older players signed by Arsenal for a significant fee during the Kroenke era. Despite this, his ability to immediately enhance the squad is seen as crucial at this stage of their project. Over four and a half years at Newcastle, he has made 153 Premier League appearances, establishing himself as a top midfielder.

His appeal to Arsenal is multifaceted, including his extensive experience and consistent availability. Since his first full season in the Premier League, Guimaraes has played over 85 percent of available minutes, demonstrating his reliability and resilience to injury, which suggests long-term durability.

Guimaraes is recognized as a comprehensive midfielder, combining physical intensity with technical skill. His statistics during his time with Newcastle highlight this, placing him among the Premier League’s top five players for both tackles and through-balls since 2022. This versatility allows him to excel in both defensive and creative aspects of the game.

His contributions include 55 goal involvements in 153 Premier League games for Newcastle, achieving double figures in goal contributions in each of the last three seasons. This blend of industry, aggression, and imaginative distribution would appeal to Mikel Arteta, who seeks to maintain his side’s physical dominance and enhance their technical prowess in midfield.

His adaptability is another key attribute; like Declan Rice, Guimaraes can operate effectively as either a No. 6 or a No. 8. This flexibility would allow Arteta to accelerate Arsenal’s build-up play from deep or push him further forward to break down resilient opponents in the attacking third.

Impact on Newcastle and Arsenal’s Midfield

For Newcastle, the potential departure of Guimaraes would be significant. He has been a key player since joining from Lyon in January 2022. He was also part of the team that won the Carabao Cup in 2025.

The club has already seen other player movements this summer. Newcastle reportedly admires Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara and is monitoring Auxerre’s Kevin Danois, as they would look to replace any midfielders sold during the transfer window.

For Arsenal, the arrival of Guimaraes would raise questions about other midfielders, including Myles Lewis-Skelly, who reportedly surpassed Martin Zubimendi towards the end of last season. However, it would also allow Arteta to alleviate the workload on players like Zubimendi, whose fatigue reportedly affected his form last campaign, and Rice, who has spoken about managing neural pain.

The need for additional midfield support is evident. Arsenal has reportedly tracked the midfielder since his time in France, and Arteta is said to be an admirer.

Early discussions have reportedly taken place, and Arsenal’s pre-season is set to begin in mid-July, with their first pre-season fixture scheduled for August 1 against Girona.
