Spirit Airlines has cancelled all flights and started an orderly wind-down of operations on May 2, 2026. This abrupt decision stems from a doubling in jet fuel prices and failed bailout talks. The airline accounted for about 5 percent of US flights at one point.

Key statistics:

  • Spirit Airlines had 4,119 domestic flights scheduled between May 1 and May 15, offering 809,638 seats.
  • The restructuring plan assumed jet fuel costs of $2.24 per gallon in 2026, but prices climbed to $4.51 per gallon by the end of April.
  • The collapse resulted in approximately 17,000 direct and indirect job losses.

Spirit Airlines was in discussions for a $500 million bailout from the Trump administration that ultimately collapsed. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that other airlines are now offering $200 one-way flights for travelers with proof of purchase of a cancelled Spirit flight.

Officials have not disclosed any specific plans regarding travel refunds or compensation for affected passengers. Spirit Airlines had previously filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year before its shutdown.

In a statement, Spirit Airlines expressed regret over the situation, citing significant impacts from rising oil prices. A creditor close to the deal remarked that despite efforts to save the airline, it was too late—”you can’t breathe life into a corpse.”
