Liverpool’s pursuit of Barcola
Liverpool is reportedly preparing an initial offer for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. This move comes as Liverpool seeks to replace Mohamed Salah, who departed at the close of last season. Barcola, a France international, has been identified as a primary target for the club.
PSG reportedly values Barcola at approximately £145m. However, Liverpool is reportedly aiming to secure a deal closer to the £100m mark. Barcola is said to be interested in a move to Liverpool for a new challenge, having reportedly seen his playing time decrease at PSG. He currently has two years remaining on his contract.
Initially, Liverpool had shown interest in RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, but he is now expected to join Real Madrid. The potential transfer fee for Barcola, if it reaches the higher valuation, would reportedly set a new British transfer record.
Carragher’s reservations and squad balance
Former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher has expressed reservations about the potential acquisition of Barcola. He believes that Liverpool‘s more pressing need is a replacement for Mohamed Salah on the right wing, rather than another left winger.
Carragher noted that Liverpool already has several options for the left wing, including Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha, and new signing Victor Munoz. He argued that signing Barcola would lead to an oversupply in one position while the right wing remains unaddressed.
“He’s a great player, there’s no doubt about that – I’d love to get Barcola at Liverpool,” Carragher stated. “But he’s a left winger for me. Liverpool’s big thing that stands out like a sore thumb right now is replacing Mo Salah, a right winger.”
Carragher also raised concerns that Barcola’s arrival could potentially hinder the development of young winger Rio Ngumoha. Ngumoha, who will turn 18 in August, had a notable season last term, scoring twice in 19 Premier League appearances.
The former defender pointed out that Liverpool previously indicated they would not sign a left winger to avoid blocking Ngumoha’s path. He questioned the club’s current approach, given their reported interest in Barcola for the same position.
“There’s talk that Rio Ngumoha could play on the right and get some minutes there. As a young player, that’s fine, playing on both sides. But I think his position is the left-right now,” Carragher added. He suggested that if Liverpool were to sign Barcola, they would also need to acquire a right winger and potentially move on some existing wide players.

Do I think he’s worth £145m? Absolutely not.”
