Brighton & Hove Albion were held to a goalless draw by Norwegian side Tromsø in the first leg of their Conference League play-off. The match, played almost 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, saw Brighton create several opportunities but fail to convert them.
The Seagulls, playing their first competitive game of the season, faced a Tromsø team that is midway through its domestic campaign. Despite Brighton‘s dominance in possession, Tromsø‘s goalkeeper, Jakob Haugaard, made crucial saves to deny early chances from Georginio Rutter and Ibrahim Osman.
Key Moments in the Match
In the 29th minute, Haugaard was called into action, diving to his left to push wide a strike from Rutter from 25 yards. Shortly after, following a corner, Osman controlled the ball and volleyed it, but Haugaard reacted quickly to tip it out for another corner.
Brighton continued to press, and in the 45th minute, a corner from Gross found Boscagli unmarked in the middle, but his header went over the bar. The second half saw Tromsø create their own significant chances on the break.
In the 49th minute, a pass from Edvardsson reached Heine Larsen, who beat the offside trap. However, Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen rushed off his line to make a vital save with his body. Later, in the 85th minute, Isak Vadebu also broke through Brighton‘s high defensive line but skewed his shot wide of the goal.
Team Line-ups and Manager’s Comments
Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler gave a first competitive start to defender Luka Vuskovic. Vuskovic, who joined the club for a reported £46m from Tottenham this summer, had a relatively quiet evening but received a yellow card in the second half for a shirt pull. Fellow summer signing Zadok Yohanna came on as a late substitute.
Notable absentees from the Brighton squad included Carlos Baleba and Yankuba Minteh, both of whom are currently sidelined due to injury. Baleba has been linked with Manchester United, while Minteh has been linked with Liverpool this season.
Following the match, Fabian Hürzeler shared his thoughts with club media. He acknowledged that Tromsø played as expected, defending well and compactly, with many players in their box blocking shots. He also praised Tromsø‘s goalkeeper and their effectiveness in transition.
Hürzeler stated, "We created opportunities, but in the end we have to be satisfied with a draw, although it’s not the result we hoped for." He added that while Brighton controlled the game, they were not quick enough in possession. He also noted that Tromsø had two big chances from transition moments, indicating areas where Brighton needs to improve defensively.
The Brighton manager expressed anticipation for the return leg, saying, "Now we are looking forward to the opportunity to win the game in front of our own fans. There are certain aspects we have to improve against Tromsø. Overall, like I said, they are a good football team so we will have to play on our highest level to win the game at the Amex."
Upcoming Fixtures
Brighton will host Tromsø in the return leg next Thursday. Before that, Brighton will play their Premier League opener at home against Aston Villa on Sunday at 14:00 BST. Tromsø will have a seven-day rest before facing Brighton in England.
