Transfer Window Activity

Liverpool are actively engaged in the summer transfer window as the September 1 deadline approaches. The club is preparing for the upcoming Premier League season, which begins with a match against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Efforts are focused on strengthening the team’s attacking options. The transfer saga involving Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola continues, with ongoing discussions about his future. Reports indicate that PSG will not play Barcola, or Ibrahima Mbaye, in upcoming matches until there is clarity on their club situations for the next season. Both players were not included in Sunday’s Trophee des Champions tie against Lens.

Former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey has suggested that Barcola would be an “outstanding signing,” comparing him to Sadio Mane. Heskey also commented on the club’s transfer strategy, noting that Andoni Iraola, the new manager, has brought in Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo, with Araujo joining on a loan deal.

Player Movements and Speculation

There is continued speculation surrounding several current Liverpool players. Curtis Jones has been linked with a potential move to Inter Milan. Roma has reportedly held talks regarding Luis Henrique, a player valued at approximately £25 million including bonuses, with Inter Milan potentially looking to sell him to fund a move for Jones. Premier League clubs are also reportedly interested in Henrique.

Cody Gakpo is another player generating transfer rumours, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly interested. However, Liverpool has indicated no plans to sell the Dutch international this summer, and there have been no negotiations between the two clubs, despite Tottenham’s continued interest and discussions with Gakpo’s representatives.

Former Liverpool player John Aldridge has urged the club not to sell Gakpo, stating it would be “insane” given the need for squad depth across four competitions this season. Aldridge emphasized the importance of buying players rather than selling them to ensure a strong squad capable of challenging for a top-four finish in the Premier League. The club’s decision regarding Gakpo may be influenced by the outcome of their pursuit of Barcola.

Meanwhile, James McConnell’s proposed loan move to Preston North End has been put on hold. The midfielder, who has made 13 senior appearances for the Reds since his debut in 2023, was set to join the Championship side. Additionally, Kieran Morrison, a 19-year-old winger, is reportedly a target for Sheffield Wednesday for a season-long loan. Talks are progressing for the Northern Irishman, who has garnered interest from other European clubs and Championship sides after impressing during the pre-season tour of America.

Squad Needs and Player Expectations

Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson believes the club still needs to make four to five signings this summer. He highlighted defensive areas as a particular concern, especially after the departures of Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Ibrahima Konate earlier in the summer. Thompson stressed the need for two quality players for every position, including defensively, in midfield, and on the wing.

Emile Heskey also commented on the expectations for Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool last summer. Heskey believes Isak needs to achieve around 20 goals and assists this season, especially with the absence of high-scoring players like Salah, Mane, and Firmino. Heskey noted that the pressure is on Isak as the number nine.

Regarding defensive players, former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson stated that this season is crucial for Milos Kerkez, who joined from Bournemouth last summer. Johnson believes Kerkez needs to demonstrate more consistent top performances to secure his position as a left-back, suggesting that Iraola’s arrival could help him improve.

In other news, Juventus boss Luciano Spalletti discussed his club’s failed attempt to sign goalkeeper Alisson Becker this summer. Juventus had targeted Alisson and even offered him a shirt number before ultimately signing Guglielmo Vicario from Spurs. Alisson is now expected to remain with Liverpool.

Rio Ngumoha, 17, is expected to play a significant role on the right-wing for Liverpool this season. He has been tested in that position during pre-season by Andoni Iraola, as the club has not yet signed a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
