Vieira’s Appointment Amidst Federation Turmoil
The appointment of Patrick Vieira as the new coach of Senegal has been announced, though a contract has not yet been signed, and the date for his official presentation remains unconfirmed. The Senegal Football Federation (FSF) stated that discussions regarding the administrative and contractual arrangements for Vieira are ongoing. Vieira, a former Arsenal and Inter Milan midfielder, received unanimous approval to succeed Pape Thiaw during an FSF meeting on Monday.
The FSF’s decision comes at a challenging period for the national team, with the federation currently facing several off-field issues. One significant concern is the unresolved termination of Thiaw’s previous deal. Thiaw was dismissed following the team’s exit from the Fifa World Cup, a decision reportedly made without the formal endorsement of the Senegalese government, which provides funding for the national team.
Thiaw is reportedly seeking payment for several months of outstanding wages and various bonuses, with the total amount cited as almost $815,000. Additionally, a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) is anticipated by Friday concerning the election of the current FSF leadership, an election that has been contested for the past year. This Cas ruling could potentially challenge the legitimacy of the FSF hierarchy and, consequently, Vieira’s selection as head coach.
Challenges and Expectations for the Teranga Lions
Despite the internal challenges, the FSF proceeded with the coaching change to prepare for upcoming fixtures. Senegal is scheduled to play in the qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on 23 September, with an away match against Mozambique in their Group J opener, followed by a game against Ethiopia days later.
Vieira’s connection to Senegal holds symbolic importance, as he was born in Dakar in June 1976. He moved to France at the age of eight and went on to have a distinguished playing career, including winning the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000 with France. He faced Senegal once as a player, during the opening match of the 2002 World Cup, where France experienced a 1-0 defeat.
His coaching career has included stints with New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa. At Crystal Palace, he led the team to a 12th-placed finish in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup semi-finals in the 2021-22 season. However, he was dismissed in March 2023 after an 11-match winless run in the league.

Vieira’s predecessor, Pape Thiaw, was sacked after Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup by Belgium in the round of 16. The federation cited an assessment of the team’s performance and future prospects as reasons for the change. The Teranga Lions had previously secured an Afcon title with a 1-0 win after extra time in January’s Afcon final, though the ultimate destination of that trophy is also subject to a Cas ruling after a controversial penalty incident.
The new coach inherits a team with promising young talent, tasked with building upon the legacy left by players such as Sadio Mane, Edouard Mendy, and Kalidou Koulibaly. The shortlist for the coaching position also included Patrick Kluivert, Patrice Carteron, Habib Beye, and Oumar Daf. Vieira’s return to Senegal, the country of his birth, is anticipated to be a significant moment for the national team.

One of Vieira’s notable contributions to Senegalese football includes his investment in the Diambars Institute towards the end of his playing career. This institute has since become a prominent football academy in Africa, producing players like Idrissa Gana Gueye, Bamba Dieng, and Abdoulaye Seck, who have all contributed to Senegal’s success since 2018.
