Norway has progressed to the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a narrow victory over Côte d’Ivoire. The match, held at Dallas Stadium in Texas, saw Erling Haaland score a late winner, securing a 2-1 result. This outcome eliminates Côte d’Ivoire from the tournament.

The Norwegian side took a first-half lead through Antonio Nusa, who found the net with a curling shot in the 39th minute. This goal came after a period where Norway had largely been chasing the game, but they began to assert themselves just before Nusa’s effort. Minutes later, Haaland nearly extended Norway’s advantage with a close-range shot that was blocked.

Despite Norway carrying much of the play after their opening goal, the second half saw both teams create opportunities. A significant moment occurred when Torbjørn Heggem‘s shot was blocked off the line by Côte d’Ivoire midfielder Amad Diallo. Following defensive substitutions by Norway during a hydration break, Diallo equalised for Côte d’Ivoire with a skillful run and finish.

Diallo, a Manchester United player, executed a quick one-two with Nicolas Pépé, dribbled past the Norwegian defence, and scored with a left-footed shot that bounced over Ørjan Nyland. However, Haaland ultimately sealed the victory for Norway in the 86th minute. The move originated from the Norwegian right, with Patrick Berg providing a through ball to Haaland, who scored into an open net. Haaland now has five goals in the tournament.

The victory validates coach Ståle Solbakken‘s decision to rest nearly his entire squad in the final group game against France. This strategy had drawn criticism, particularly from those who had anticipated a direct confrontation between Haaland and Kylian Mbappé. Solbakken had stated that the success of this decision would depend on the outcome of this match, and Norway’s advancement to the Round of 16 justifies his approach.

For both nations, this match represented rare territory, as neither had previously won a knockout game at a World Cup. However, a recurring issue for Côte d’Ivoire since their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations victory (held in 2024) has been a lack of precision and cutting edge, leading to numerous opportunities without sufficient goal threat.

The Opta supercomputer had calculated Norway as the clear favourites to progress, winning in 56.1 percent of 25,000 pre-match simulations in normal time, compared to Côte d’Ivoire’s 21.6 percent. A draw, leading to extra time, occurred in 22.3 percent of simulations. Norway is now set to face Brazil in the Round of 16 at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 5.
