France and Norway are set to face each other at Boston Stadium on Friday in a World Cup group stage match. The fixture will feature two prominent forwards, Kylian Mbappe of France and Erling Haaland of Norway, both of whom have been instrumental for their respective national teams.

Both nations have secured qualification for the knockout stages after winning their initial two group-stage matches. Mbappe and Haaland have each scored four goals in the tournament, with two goals in each of their opening games. This upcoming match will determine the top spot in Group I, potentially influencing their paths in the knockout bracket.

Player Importance to National Teams

The significance of both Mbappe and Haaland to their national teams is particularly pronounced on the international stage. Since August 2022, France has achieved a win rate of 69.8% in matches where Mbappe has played, a figure that drops to 50% when he is absent from the squad. Mbappe, who is France’s all-time leading goalscorer, also contributes to increased offensive output, with Les Bleus averaging 2.3 goals per game with him, compared to 1.9 without him.

Haaland’s importance to Norway is even more critical, given the team’s comparatively limited squad depth. Since August 2022, Norway has won 64.5% of its matches with Haaland on the pitch, a stark contrast to the 33.3% win rate without him. Both players have demonstrated their ability to perform under the pressure of a major tournament.

Mbappe has scored 16 goals in 16 World Cup appearances. Haaland is participating in his first World Cup and has become the sixth player in the tournament’s history to score multiple goals in each of his first two appearances. He is also only the second player in the last 50 years to achieve this, following Harry Kane in 2018. Haaland has also maintained a remarkable scoring streak, netting goals in 12 consecutive competitive international matches, including 16 goals in his last six.

In terms of overall international scoring, Haaland has been more prolific. Mbappe has 60 international goals in 100 games, while Haaland is close behind with 59 goals in 52 matches, playing 48 fewer games than Mbappe.

Comparing Playing Styles and Contributions

Mbappe and Haaland exhibit distinct playing styles. Mbappe is known for his dribbling from wide areas and his ability to create chances, while Haaland is primarily a penalty area player, adept at finding scoring opportunities within the box. Despite these differences, their output in Europe’s top five leagues has been nearly identical since Haaland’s debut for Borussia Dortmund in January 2020.

Their attacking metrics for their clubs this season show Mbappe outperforming Haaland in shots, touches, and chances created. However, Haaland recorded more assists in the 2025-26 season. Mbappe has also attempted 14 dribbles in his first two World Cup matches, compared to just one from Haaland. Haaland, however, holds an advantage in chance conversion, having converted 23.43% of his shots in league matches over the past four club seasons, while Mbappe converted 18.24%.

Mbappe’s defensive contribution for Real Madrid this season placed him near the bottom among players with a minimum of 900 minutes played in the top five leagues. Their goal involvements for their national teams since August 2022 are comparable: Mbappe has been involved in 44% of France’s goals, with 33 goals and 17 assists, while Haaland has contributed to 43.9% of Norway’s goals, with 39 goals and four assists.

France is considered a favourite to win the tournament. Haaland himself has expressed his belief that France will defeat Norway on Friday and ultimately lift the trophy. Despite this, Norway, with Haaland’s current form, is seen as capable of posing a significant challenge.
