Netherlands secure Group F top spot
The Netherlands have concluded their Group F campaign at the World Cup 2026 by securing the top position, setting up a match against Morocco, the runners-up from Group C and 2022 semi-finalists. This upcoming fixture is scheduled to take place in Monterrey.
The Dutch side established an early lead against Tunisia. Within the first three minutes, Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri inadvertently directed a cross from Denzel Dumfries into his own net. Shortly after, Brian Brobbey added a second goal, marking his third of the tournament, by tapping in a delivery from Virgil van Dijk.
Despite a defensive lapse that allowed Tunisia to score in the second half, the Netherlands maintained their advantage. Hazem Mastouri headed in a goal after Tijjani Reijnders lost track of him from a corner. However, Jan Paul van Hecke restored the Dutch team’s two-goal lead by heading a corner towards the goal, which deflected off a Tunisia defender before going past the goalkeeper.
Group F conclusion and knockout stage implications
Tunisia concluded their Group F matches at the bottom of the standings, having suffered three defeats and conceding a total of 12 goals during the group stage. The Netherlands’ victory ensured their progression as group winners.
The World Cup 2026 group stage is nearing its end, with teams vying for spots in the knockout rounds. A significant number of the 48 nations, specifically 32, will advance to the next stage. This includes the top two teams from each group, along with the eight highest-scoring third-placed teams.
In Group F, the top three teams could have seen their positions change after the final matches. The Netherlands were leading Japan on goals scored, with four points from a possible six, while Sweden trailed by one point. Tunisia was already out of contention prior to the final round of fixtures.
Tie-breaking criteria for advancement
For teams finishing with the same number of points, their group standing is determined by their head-to-head record against the team they are level with. If one team tied on points has defeated another in the group stage, the winner will be placed higher in the table.
In situations where multiple teams are level on points, a mini-league is formed, excluding results against other teams. These tied teams are then ranked by points earned in their matches against each other, followed by goal difference, and then goals scored. If these criteria do not separate them, the overall group goal difference and goals scored are considered.
Further tie-breaking criteria include the Team Conduct Score (TCS), which is a fair play score based on cards accumulated. Teams start with zero points, with deductions for yellow cards (-1), red cards for two yellows (-3), straight red cards (-4), and a yellow followed by a straight red (-5). A score closer to zero is better. If teams remain level, the higher Fifa ranking from the June update is used.
The top eight third-placed teams are determined by the most points accumulated. If eight or more nations finish third with the same number of points, goal difference will be the deciding factor. Teams finishing third with four points or more are likely to advance, while those with three points would require a strong goal difference to progress.
