Bosnia-Herzegovina secured a crucial victory against Qatar in their final Group B fixture, enhancing their prospects of advancing to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time. The team finished with four points, level with Canada, but placed third in the group due to goal difference. This result means they did not automatically qualify for the last 32 but could still progress as one of the best eight third-placed teams in the tournament.

The match, played in Seattle with temperatures reaching 29C, saw Bosnia-Herzegovina start with strong attacking intent. Early efforts from Ermedin Demirovic and Ivan Sunjic tested Qatar’s goalkeeper, Mahmud Abunada. The deadlock was broken in the 29th minute when 18-year-old Kerim Alajbegovic, after navigating past two Qatari defenders, unleashed a powerful right-footed strike past Abunada.

The Bosnian supporters, present in large numbers, celebrated further when their 40-year-old captain, Edin Dzeko, played a key role in the team’s second goal just six minutes later. Dzeko, making his 150th appearance for his country, saw his volleyed effort deflect off defender Sultan Al Brake and past Abunada, resulting in an own goal. Dzeko, who holds national records for goals and appearances, nearly added a third goal shortly after, but his low shot hit the post.

Qatar, however, created their own opportunities. Captain Hassan Al-Haydos reduced the deficit three minutes before halftime, bundling in a cross from Edmilson Jr. Pedro Miguel also struck the post after being set up by Akram Afif, as Qatar ended the first half strongly. Afif continued to pose a threat in the second half, though Qatar lacked a decisive finish despite bringing on prolific scorer Almoez Ali for the final 20 minutes.

Bosnia-Herzegovina maintained a solid defence and sealed their victory in the 80th minute. Substitute Ermin Mahmic scored his second consecutive goal, slotting the ball past Abunada after a scramble in the Qatar box. This marked Bosnia’s second win in a World Cup, following a 3-1 victory against Iran in their debut campaign in 2014.

While their four points should be sufficient for advancement, Bosnia-Herzegovina must now await the results of other matches to confirm their qualification. Qatar finished at the bottom of the group with one point.

Emotional Reactions and Fan Support

The team’s performance resonated deeply with former players and fans alike. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, during a post-match analysis, expressed strong emotions regarding the team’s success, highlighting the unifying power of football for Bosnia and its people. He spoke about his father’s roots and the joy of seeing the happiness among the fans, describing it as a moment that gave him goosebumps.

Ibrahimovic noted the significance of the team advancing from the group stage, but emphasised the emotional impact of the fans singing. Manager Sergej Barbarez echoed similar sentiments, acknowledging the team’s journey as underdogs and their achievement of doing something significant. He stated, “We came here as complete underdogs. We’re trying to do something big and major, and this is now something that has come true.”

Goalkeeper Nikola Vasilj also shared his pride, particularly in the overwhelming support from the fans. He described the atmosphere at the stadium as “amazing,” noting that the number of fans nearly doubled the usual attendance at their national stadium. Vasilj remarked on the strong presence of Bosnian fans, especially in the last two games, making it feel like a home game.

Bosnia-Herzegovina was among the last teams to qualify for this World Cup, securing their spot by defeating Italy on penalties in March. This marks only the second time in their history that they have reached this stage, following a group stage exit in 2014. Vasilj called it a “historical moment” for the team to potentially advance to the next stage, emphasizing that it had never happened before.

He expressed pride in the team’s ability to win challenging games and acknowledged the significance of the moment for the country and its people. Dzeko, one of only two players remaining from the 2014 World Cup squad alongside Saed Kolasinac, celebrated his 150th cap against Qatar, with Vasilj expressing happiness for his captain’s continued journey.
