Ecuador achieved a significant 2-1 comeback victory against Germany in New Jersey, securing their place in the World Cup 2026 knockout stages. This result marks only the second time in their history that the South American side has advanced past the group stage. The win came after an early scare, with Germany taking the lead, but Ecuador fought back to claim a crucial three points.
The match saw Germany’s Leroy Sane open the scoring within the first two minutes. However, Ecuador responded quickly, with Nilson Angulo levelling the score just seven minutes later. The decisive goal came in the 77th minute from Gonzalo Plata, whose late winner propelled Ecuador into the next round as one of the best third-placed teams.
Beccacece’s emotional journey
For Ecuador’s head coach, Sebastian Beccacece, the victory was particularly emotional. He had previously stated that he expected to step down if his team failed to reach the knockout stages. Following the final whistle, Beccacece was seen celebrating with his family, clambering over stadium barriers, a stark contrast to the pressure he faced earlier in the tournament.
Reports had indicated a verbal confrontation between members of Beccacece’s family and supporters after a goalless draw against Curacao. Before the match against Germany, he acknowledged the results-driven nature of his role, stating, "If things don’t work, I will have to leave a place I love very much." The dramatic 2-1 win, however, suggests he has earned more time at the helm, especially given the fighting spirit displayed by his squad against the four-time world champions.
Former England captain Alan Shearer commented on Beccacece’s situation, noting that the coach was "looking for a reaction from his players and boy has he got one." Shearer added that Beccacece and his players "gambled, they fought, they scrapped and they’ve come out on top."
Beccacece’s tenure with Ecuador began with a 1-0 defeat by Brazil. However, his side then went on an 11-match unbeaten run, qualifying for the World Cup as runners-up in South America, behind only Brazil. Despite this strong qualification campaign, their start to the tournament was challenging, with a 1-0 defeat by Ivory Coast and a goalless draw against debutants Curacao, which led to fan discontent.
Beccacece, who had no notable playing career, built his reputation as an assistant to Jorge Sampaoli during Chile’s successful era, helping them reach the 2014 World Cup and win their first Copa America title in 2015. He also served as Sampaoli’s assistant at the 2018 World Cup with Argentina. His current achievement with Ecuador is seen by some as the biggest feat of his managerial career.
Match details and implications
The match itself was full of incident. Germany’s early lead through Sane was quickly nullified by Angulo’s ninth-minute shot, which was Ecuador’s first goal of the tournament. VAR played a significant role, with a German penalty for a foul on Kai Havertz overturned after a pitchside review showed Pedro Vite had been fouled in the build-up by Sane.
Ecuador then pressed for a winner, and Plata capitalised on a corner, prodding the ball past Manuel Neuer. Following the goal, Ecuador defended resolutely to secure their historic qualification. Germany, who had already qualified for the knockout stages, will need to recover from this defeat as they prepare for their next match in the round of 32.
Ecuador’s qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup began with a three-point deduction in 2022 due to the eligibility dispute surrounding Byron Castillo. They started the 2026 qualifiers under Felix Sanchez, who guided them to three wins from six matches before his dismissal in July 2024 following a Copa America quarter-final defeat.
This is Ecuador’s fifth appearance at the World Cup, having first qualified in 2002. Their only previous progression past the group stage was in 2006, where they were eliminated by England in the last 16. The current squad features players like Willian Pacho of Paris St-Germain, Piero Hincapie of Arsenal, and Moises Caicedo of Chelsea, alongside veteran striker Enner Valencia, who has six career World Cup goals.
Ecuador boss Beccacece stated that the qualification was "for the people" and encouraged them to "celebrate and enjoy it." Match-winner Gonzalo Plata added that the team believes strongly in itself and will be "even more hungry for glory" in the next round. South American football expert Tim Vickery described this moment as potentially "the greatest moment in the history of the Ecuador national team," suggesting their aim is to have their best World Cup ever, surpassing their 2006 performance.

Germany’s reaction to the defeat
Germany’s coach, Julian Nagelsmann, expressed his disappointment with his team’s performance, stating that they had committed "tactical suicide" after taking an early lead. He noted that after Sane’s goal, his side began "committing tactical suicide with our positioning."
Nagelsmann acknowledged Ecuador’s determination, saying, "Ecuador had everything to play for, and you could tell — they had their foot on the gas." Despite the loss, he maintained that his players gave their all. He also stressed the importance of learning from the defeat and improving for their upcoming last-32 match.
Germany captain Joshua Kimmich echoed his coach’s sentiments, observing that Ecuador "wanted to win more than us." Kimmich highlighted the need for Germany to tighten their defensive play and minimise turnovers to avoid being eliminated from the tournament. Germany will face a third-place finisher from either Group A, B, C, D, or F in the round of 32 on Monday.
