Carrick on the Season’s Start and Transfer Activity

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has rejected suggestions that his team faces an easy start to the new Premier League season. Carrick described the notion as “ridiculous,” particularly with upcoming matches against newly promoted sides. The team is set to visit Hull City, who earned promotion through the play-offs, followed by a home game against Ipswich.

Carrick stated that the start is tough and emphasised his focus on the immediate fixture. He also addressed ongoing concerns among the club’s fanbase regarding additional signings. While Youri Tielemans joined from Aston Villa for £35m on 14 July, talks are reportedly continuing with Brighton for midfielder Carlos Baleba, though a deal has not yet been finalised.

The manager confirmed that the club is actively working to strengthen the squad. Historically, Manchester United supporters have often had to wait until later in the transfer window for significant business to be concluded, a pattern that has been observed over recent seasons.

Historical Context of United’s Season Starts and Transfers

The club’s history shows that early season results and transfer activity often follow a familiar pattern. On only two previous occasions in the Premier League era have Manchester United started their campaign with two fixtures against newly promoted teams. In neither instance did the team secure two consecutive victories.

For example, in August 2001, they came from behind to defeat Fulham but then drew 2-2 at Blackburn. Eight years later, after reaching the Champions League final, a single goal against Birmingham was followed by a loss to Burnley at Turf Moor. The most recent instance of Manchester United starting with successive victories was in the 2017-18 season under Jose Mourinho, with 4-0 wins against West Ham and Swansea.

The trend of late transfer dealings is also notable. For the past six seasons, at least one senior first-team player has arrived at Old Trafford as the transfer window neared its close. Last season, Senne Lammens eventually became the new number one goalkeeper after a deadline day decision. In 2024, Manuel Ugarte was signed from PSG on deadline day, and the year prior, Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat joined on loan.

The £81.3m fee for Antony, now with Real Betis, remains the second-highest fee paid by United, behind Paul Pogba. Antony’s deal was finalised on 1 September 2022, which was transfer deadline day. The return of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2021 was also a deadline-day acquisition, as was Edinson Cavani in 2020, whose deal was completed in October due to Covid-19 related delays.

Team Ambitions and Upcoming Challenges

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has openly stated the club’s ambition to secure a 21st top-flight title. The club’s last league title was in 2013. Carrick’s return has raised hopes, with the team qualifying for the Champions League with three rounds remaining last season.

New signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are expected to bolster the midfield. The upcoming 2026-27 campaign is anticipated to be demanding, with expectations for the squad to perform well in the Champions League, the league, and both domestic cups. To compete for the English title, the team aims to improve its away form, having recorded seven wins from 19 away games last term.

Manchester United has a strong record in Premier League openers, winning on a record 22 occasions, and they have never lost against promoted opponents, with nine wins and three draws. Carrick also has a positive managerial record against Hull, winning four of his six meetings across all competitions and remaining unbeaten in three prior visits to the MKM Stadium.

Hull City, returning to the top flight after nine years, have won 60% of their Premier League openers. Under owner Acun Ilıcalı and head coach Sergej Jakirović, they will aim to improve on their previous stint. Hull secured promotion via the Championship play-offs in May. Their recent pre-season schedule concluded with a goalless draw against Nice.

Both teams face fitness concerns, with United potentially missing Manuel Ugarte, Matthijs De Ligt, and possibly Benjamin Sesko. However, Bruno Fernandes is expected to be available for United, having set a new record for most assists in a single Premier League campaign last season. Marcus Rashford, who made a second-half appearance against Milan last week, could make his first competitive appearance for United in nearly two years.

The last league meeting between Hull City and Manchester United was a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford in February 2017. Hull remains winless in all 10 Premier League encounters against United, with two draws and eight losses.
