Chelsea’s Transfer Window Activity
Chelsea are reportedly looking to sell 11 players during the current summer transfer window. This comes as the club has been active in bolstering its squad, with Jordan Henderson marking the eighth new arrival this summer. New manager Xabi Alonso has overseen significant spending, including £117 million for Morgan Rogers and the addition of Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix.
The club’s recent signings also include Danny Welbeck, whose arrival in early August signals a shift from the club’s previous focus on younger players. Other new faces include Valentín Barco from Strasbourg, Geovany Quenda, Marc Ballestra, and Emmanuel Emega. These acquisitions follow a season where Chelsea finished in tenth place.
Potential Player Departures
With a growing squad, reports indicate that up to 11 players could be permanently transferred before the deadline. The potential total from these sales could approach £500 million. Among the players linked with a move away is Enzo Fernández, for whom Chelsea is reportedly seeking £120 million. Fernández joined the club for £106 million in January 2023.
Another player reportedly not considered untouchable is Pedro Neto, with a potential exit valued at £70 million. Malo Gusto is also mentioned with a price tag of £75 million. In defence, after signing Lacroix, Alonso has indicated a preference for a smaller group of defenders, suggesting that some current players may depart.
Trevoh Chalobah is reportedly close to a £31 million move to Como. Other defenders who could leave include Axel Disasi, valued at £25 million, and Benoît Badiashile, with a reported value of £30 million. Disasi spent the latter half of last season on loan at West Ham United.
The arrival of Welbeck is expected to lead to the sale of several forwards. Liam Delap is among those most likely to leave, despite the club aiming to make a profit on the £30 million paid for him last summer. Nicolas Jackson, who recently returned from a loan spell at Bayern Munich, could fetch around £65 million. Young forward Marc Guiu is priced at £25 million, while Emmanuel Emegha, who joined from Strasbourg, is valued at £20 million by one report and could face an uncertain future.
Additionally, David Datro Fofana is reportedly available for a permanent transfer, with a valuation of £3 million. The combined potential fees for these 11 players could reach £494 million.
Manager’s Defensive Strategy
Alonso’s comments regarding his defensive preferences suggest a need to streamline the squad. He stated that he would prefer to have only “four or five” central defenders. Following the signing of Lacroix, the club has several central defenders on its books, including Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong, Aaron Anselmino, and Mamadou Sarr, in addition to Chalobah, Disasi, and Badiashile.
With Chalobah’s reported move to Como imminent, the club still faces the task of managing its defensive roster. Disasi and Badiashile are also attracting interest and could be sold if suitable offers are made. The focus remains on making further sales or arranging loans for players like Sarr and Anselmino to align with Alonso’s preferred squad size.
