Jurrien Timber, the Netherlands international, has returned to London from Arsenal‘s pre-season training camp in Spain. This move is part of his ongoing recovery from a groin injury, an issue that has affected him recently. Sources close to the club have indicated that his return to London is a scheduled part of his rehabilitation and not a new setback. He is expected to rejoin his teammates in Spain once this phase of his individual program in the United Kingdom is finished.

Timber‘s departure from the squad, while potentially raising initial concerns among supporters, aligns with a planned approach to manage his fitness. The versatile defender is working towards finalising his recovery in anticipation of the upcoming Premier League season.

Ongoing Fitness Challenges

This latest groin issue adds to a series of fitness struggles for Timber since his move to Emirates Stadium. His debut season in north London was significantly impacted by a serious knee injury. After completing a £34m transfer in July 2023, he sustained an anterior cruciate ligament injury on the opening weekend of the campaign, which effectively sidelined him for much of his first year under manager Mikel Arteta.

Despite these early challenges, Timber became a regular presence for much of the last season. However, an ankle injury later disrupted his momentum, keeping him out for two months towards the end of the campaign. He did recover in time to participate in the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Following this, a subsequent groin problem prevented him from featuring in the World Cup.

Reports suggest that Timber underwent minor surgery for his groin injury during the summer. This operation was reportedly a factor in his withdrawal from the World Cup, allowing him to focus on recovery before the 2026/27 campaign. The hope is that this procedure will enable him to play consistently without further setbacks.

During the pre-season camp in Girona, Timber has been engaged in individual gym work rather than participating in group sessions. He was also not involved in Arsenal‘s behind-closed-doors friendly against MK Dons. When asked about his status, Timber stated he was “getting there slowly, trying hard, rehabbing during the summer, hopefully back soon.”

Importance to Arsenal’s Plans

When fully fit, Timber is considered a vital component of Arteta’s system, offering defensive versatility and composure in build-up play. He established himself as Arsenal’s primary right-back, making 30 Premier League appearances last season. These contributions helped guide the Gunners to their first league title since 2004.

Overall, Timber featured in 44 appearances for Arsenal across all competitions last season. During this period, he scored four goals and provided seven assists, solidifying his role as a key contributor. His current contract at Emirates Stadium extends until the summer of 2028, underscoring his central position in Arteta‘s long-term strategies for the team.

Pre-Season Preparations Continue

Arsenal‘s pre-season preparations are intensifying as they approach a significant campaign as defending champions. The club will compete for early silverware in the Community Shield against Manchester City on August 16. Their Premier League title defence is scheduled to begin on August 21 against newly-promoted Coventry City.

Other players are also progressing in their recoveries. Ben White, who also returned to the club, provided a positive update on his knee, stating it was “all good” and that he had started training with the team. William Saliba, who left the World Cup after France‘s elimination, is also set for club assessments before decisions are made regarding his situation. These injury boosts could place Arsenal in a strong position as the new season approaches.

The team recently returned for pre-season, with many players still on holiday after their participation in the World Cup. Mikel Arteta had previously spent time with some players in a pre-pre-season camp in Marbella. The club is also anticipating transfer movements, with Christos Tzolis expected to be announced as an Arsenal player this week, joining the pre-season group.

Arsenal is due to play a behind-closed-doors friendly before returning to Spain for their official pre-season schedule of matches.
