KCB Claims Prinsloo Sevens Title

KCB, the reigning National Sevens Circuit champions, successfully defended their Prinsloo Sevens title, marking a winning start to their title defence. The team defeated Kenya Cup champions Kabras Sugar with a score of 19-12 in a closely contested match. The encounter saw both teams making numerous raids, indicating a hard-fought battle.

During the match, Kabras Sugar initially took a lead in the third minute with an unconverted try from Michael Okusi. However, KCB responded with a try from George Ooro and a converted try by Brian Wavinya, putting them ahead 7-5. Kabras Sugar then had two players sent to the sin bin for fouls.

Ooro scored another unconverted try for KCB towards the end of the first half, increasing their lead. Vincent Onyala added another try for KCB, which Wavinya converted, two minutes before the break. Brian Muchuma scored a try for Kabras Sugar, bringing the score to 19-12 at half-time. The second half of the match saw no additional scores from either team.

Player Performances and Other Competitions

Brian Wavinya expressed that the victory provided a positive push for the team’s confidence in defending their overall title. From Kabras Sugar, Ray Ambale, returning from an injury, was recognised as the top try scorer in the tournament.

In the ladies’ Division One Championships, Irene Opiyo of Mwamba was named the top scorer. Mwamba secured the title in this division by defeating Kiambaa Ladies 19-0, after holding a 5-0 lead at half-time.

Road to the Quarter-Finals

The 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit began with the Prinsloo 7s tournament at the Nakuru Athletic Club. The opening day’s pool action determined the teams advancing to the Main Cup quarter-finals. Kabras Sugar faced Daystar Falcons, KU Blak Blad played Nondescripts, and MMUST RFC competed against Kenya Harlequin. KCB Rugby completed the quarter-final lineup with a fixture against Nakuru RFC.

Notably, three university teams—KU Blak Blad, MMUST RFC, and Daystar Falcons—secured spots in the Main Cup quarter-finals. The defending champions of the Prinsloo Sevens, Strathmore Leos, did not advance to the Main Cup quarter-finals and instead entered the bowl competition.

Strathmore Leos coach Willis Ojal had previously mentioned his team’s robust pre-season preparations, which included a victory at the Riff and Tuff tournament. He emphasised the importance of treating every opponent with respect and playing to their strengths. KCB, considered overall favourites, had strengthened their squad with new signings Nygel Amaitsa and Davis Nyangige, joining existing stars like Samuel Asati, Vincent Onyala, George Ooro, Elvis Olukusi, and Levy Amunga. Kabras Sugar coach Carlos Katywa hoped for a strong start in Nakuru to challenge KCB and Strathmore, aiming to avoid the slow starts of previous seasons. The Menengai Oilers, featuring players like Dennis Abukuse, John Okoth, and Beldad Ogeta, headlined their pool against Nakuru RFC, Impala, and Blak Blad.

In the Division Two competition, Kabarak University and Oaks Rugby Club showed strong performances on the opening day. Kabarak University achieved a significant win against NYS Scorpion, scoring 57 points, and later defeated KCA University, finishing the day unbeaten after a draw against Makueni. Zetech Oaks also had a flawless opening day, winning all three of their pool matches, including a 40-7 victory over Nandi Bears, a 52-5 win against UOE Trojans, and a 36-5 defeat of MKU Thika. Kabarak was scheduled to face Nandi Bears in the cup quarters, while Zetech Oaks was set to play KCA University in their cup quarter-final match.
