Manchester United defender Tyler Fredricson has completed a permanent move to Lausanne Sports, signing a three-year deal with the Swiss Super League club. The 21-year-old centre-back departs Old Trafford after progressing through United’s academy system from the Under-9s level.
Fredricson’s transfer to Lausanne Sports, a club also under the Ineos ownership umbrella, includes both a high-percentage sell-on and buyback clause, according to reports. This shared ownership structure could facilitate future negotiations if United were to consider re-signing the defender.
Fredricson’s Journey at Manchester United
A lifelong fan and native of Manchester, Fredricson made his senior debut for United in April 2025 under former manager Ruben Amorim during a Premier League fixture against Wolves. He also appeared in a match against Brentford the following month. His participation extended to the Carabao Cup second-round tie against Grimsby Town last season.
Fredricson’s fourth and final senior appearance for United occurred on Boxing Day last year, when he entered as a late replacement for Luke Shaw during a home match against Newcastle. United acknowledged his contributions, stating, “United is all that Tyler Fredricson has ever known. But now it’s time for a new adventure.” The club expressed gratitude for his efforts and wished him well for his next career chapter.
Fredricson had been close to joining Celtic in January but sustained an injury. He returned to first-team training at United earlier this month but did not feature in their opening two pre-season games due to the pending move to Switzerland.
Squad Changes at Old Trafford
Fredricson’s departure is part of a series of changes at Old Trafford this summer. Several other young players, including goalkeeper Radek Vitek and left-back Harry Amass, along with midfielders Toby Collyer and Dan Gore, could also leave. Academy trio Sonny Aljofree, James Bailey, and Malachi Sharpe have already departed.
More senior exits from United include Casemiro, who left at the end of his contract, and the releases of Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia. Rasmus Hojlund’s loan spell at Napoli has also been converted into a permanent arrangement.
In terms of new arrivals, United have strengthened their midfield with the signings of Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, at a combined cost of approximately £85million. Free agent goalkeeper Karl Darlow has also joined after leaving Leeds, and Wales U21 international goalkeeper Kit Margetson arrived after a compensation package was agreed with Swansea.
Tielemans reported to United’s AON Training Complex at Carrington on Thursday alongside his Belgium team-mate Senne Lammens to begin pre-season training following a post-World Cup break.
United are reportedly seeking a third midfield signing. Manuel Ugarte, who had been linked with an exit, faces months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery for a serious knee ligament injury sustained at the World Cup with Uruguay. Real Madrid duo Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga have both been linked with the club, as have Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Roma star Manu Kone, and Bournemouth playmaker Alex Scott.
The future of Marcus Rashford at United remains uncertain. He has bid farewell to Barcelona after the club chose not to exercise their €30m option to make his season-long loan permanent. Rashford shared his gratitude on Instagram on Thursday, stating, “I’m very grateful to everyone at the club for making my time here such a positive and memorable experience.”
