Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez has received a significant boost following reports that the Argentine forward is not considering a return to the Premier League this summer. This development offers renewed optimism for Barcelona as the club continues its search for a prominent attacking player under Hansi Flick.

According to journalist Pedro Morata, interest from England is unlikely to alter Alvarez’s plans. Clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool have reportedly been monitoring the situation of the World Cup winner. Despite efforts from Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta and manager Mikel Arteta to persuade the striker that North London would be an ideal destination, Alvarez appears unconvinced by the prospect of rejoining English football.

Atletico Madrid’s Financial Situation and Barcelona’s Strategy

This stance by Alvarez works in Barcelona’s favour, although negotiations with Atletico Madrid remain complex. The Madrid-based club has consistently stated its reluctance to strengthen a direct La Liga rival. Previous reports indicated that Atletico might be more open to offers from Premier League clubs than to discussions with Barcelona, highlighting the potential difficulties in any deal.

Barcelona is aware of this situation and has adopted a patient approach, monitoring developments without making public moves. The club believes that any breakthrough will depend on Alvarez’s intentions as much as on negotiations between the two clubs. From a sporting perspective, Barcelona’s admiration for Alvarez is understandable, given his development into a complete forward capable of playing centrally, behind the striker, or in wide areas, which aligns with Hansi Flick’s tactical approach.

Meanwhile, Barcelona is closely observing Atletico Madrid’s financial situation in the summer transfer market. Reports suggest that Atletico Madrid needs to sell players to balance its financial accounts and register new signings, having reportedly spent over €80 million on acquisitions such as Lee Kang-in, Heulmand, and Grimaldo.

The club had planned to sell players like Thiago Almada, Alexander Sørloth, José María Giménez, and Rogério. However, few of these deals have been finalised. Negotiations for Almada’s transfer to River Plate for €20 million for 50% of his rights are progressing, but this amount is insufficient to meet Atletico’s financial targets. The stalled sale of Sørloth, for whom Atletico Madrid is reportedly asking for €40 million, may lead the club to consider selling Julian Alvarez to continue its team strengthening plans, which include signing a replacement for Antoine Griezmann and a top-class defender.

Barcelona continues to monitor the situation, confident in Alvarez’s desire to move to Camp Nou. The club awaits developments in the days following the World Cup, which may bring decisive changes regarding the future of the transfer.

Barcelona’s Offer and Atletico’s Leverage

Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, recently addressed the club’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, confirming that an offer has been made and has the full backing of both Hansi Flick and Deco’s sporting department. Laporta emphasised that this offer is not open-ended and will have an expiry date, indicating that Barcelona will set the pace for negotiations.

Laporta also mentioned a direct conversation with Atletico Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil, describing it as open and constructive. He clarified an initial misunderstanding regarding Barcelona’s offer and stated that the offer would remain valid until Atletico found an alternative. Alvarez is under contract with Atletico until 2030, giving Diego Simeone’s club significant leverage in any potential transfer discussions.

Barcelona’s conviction that Alvarez is committed to the move has influenced their negotiating strategy, which prioritises patience. However, Laporta’s recent comments suggest that this patient approach has a limit. With Karim Adeyemi and Anthony Gordon already confirmed as summer arrivals, securing a central striker of Alvarez’s calibre would complete Flick’s primary wishlist for the attack. The next move in this transfer saga now appears to rest with Atletico Madrid.
