The World Cup 2026 semi-final in Dallas is anticipated to be a “spectacular” encounter between France and Spain, according to France boss Didier Deschamps. The match is scheduled for Tuesday.

Deschamps stated that his team is now at a different level and aims to reach the final.

Deschamps, who will step down after the tournament following 14 years in charge, believes Spain will begin the semi-final as favourites. He highlighted Spain’s defensive record, noting they have conceded only one goal in six matches. He also suggested that with the offensive quality of both teams, the game is set to be spectacular.

Team Preparations and Expectations

Spain’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, downplayed the favourite tag, emphasising that both are great national teams. He stated that the pressure to perform well for their country is inherent, regardless of external expectations.

France has demonstrated a strong offensive performance in the tournament, with Kylian Mbappe scoring eight goals and providing three assists. Mbappe is currently tied with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. De la Fuente acknowledged the threat posed by France’s players, including Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele, and Michael Olise, but stressed the importance of Spain focusing on their own style of play.

De la Fuente referenced Roman general Julius Caesar, stating, “You can’t win without suffering,” indicating his belief that achieving significant goals requires preparation for hardship. He expressed his enjoyment and privilege in his role, encouraging his players to appreciate their position and play to their potential.

France is aiming to become only the third nation to reach three consecutive World Cup finals, a feat previously achieved by West Germany (1982, 1986, 1990) and Brazil (1994, 1998, 2002). Deschamps led France to a World Cup victory in 2018 and saw them reach the final in 2022, where they were defeated by Argentina on penalties.

Key Players and Tactical Approaches

The semi-final features four of the top-ranked teams globally, with France and Spain being among them. Spain, as European champions, is making an appearance in the last four of the World Cup. The match is seen as a familiar and captivating fixture for football enthusiasts.

Spain’s tactical approach often involves controlling possession, a strategy that has resulted in an exemplary defensive record. They also excel in the final third, being the only nation to surpass 1,000 passes in that area with high accuracy. This style is intended to contain France’s potent attack while creating opportunities to score.

However, Spain’s creative output has been inconsistent at the tournament, with substitute Mikel Merino providing crucial interventions in recent matches against Portugal and Belgium. Players like Lamine Yamal have been quieter, and Nico Williams has been affected by injury. Mikel Oyarzabal’s goals have come against less formidable opposition.

France, on the other hand, is noted for its creative prowess and is the tournament’s second-highest scoring team, leading in shots on target and expected-goals value. Beyond Mbappe, players like Dembele and Olise contribute significantly to their attacking strength. Deschamps’ side was the first since Brazil in 2002 to have two players reach five tournament goals in one edition.

Spain’s midfield, featuring Rodri and Pedri, is expected to have an advantage in controlling the game. Rodri is known for carrying the ball upfield to Yamal, who has accumulated the most shot-ending carries among forwards. France’s two-man midfield, likely comprising Manu Kone and Adrien Rabiot, may be outnumbered in this area.

Despite France’s momentum, Spain presents a unique challenge. Their tactical supremacy and technical mastery, combined with a dynamic style under de la Fuente, make them strong contenders. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, with kick-off at 20:00 BST.
