“Holi is a reminder for everyone to take a moment and add some color and joy on your life during hard times, including impending exams or graduation,” said Taylor Polonsky, a student involved in organizing the event. This year marked the 14th anniversary of Holi at Elon University, where approximately 200 students, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate.
The festival, known as the Festival of Colors, is a significant Hindu celebration. It involves throwing colored powder and symbolizes the arrival of spring. Participants engaged in various activities such as coloring mandalas, creating rangoli, and applying mehndi (henna). The atmosphere was filled with excitement and joy as attendees prepared for the collective countdown to toss colored powder into the air.
At this year’s event, Surtal, Elon’s Bollywood dance team, delivered an energetic performance that captivated the audience. The performance featured traditional Bollywood music and vibrant choreography that brought a taste of Indian culture to the campus. The colorful kites flying above added to the festive ambiance.
“Planning our campus’s Holi celebration was a wonderful challenge for us,” said Addison Anderson, another organizer. The effort put into organizing this event highlights the commitment of students to celebrate diversity and cultural heritage through dance and music.
In addition to the Holi festivities at Elon, other dance events are taking place in various communities. For instance, the UI Youth Ballet and Community Dance School will present “The Wizard of Oz” as their spring concert production. This concert features new choreography set to a fresh arrangement of the film’s iconic score by Douglas Baker.
The evening will also showcase a performance of the romantic ballet Pas de Quatre by Level 5 Ensemble dancers. These events reflect a broader trend in which dance serves as an essential medium for storytelling and cultural expression.
The connection between dance and cultural celebrations like Holi emphasizes its role in fostering community spirit. As participants come together to celebrate through movement and color, they create lasting memories that transcend individual experiences.
As communities continue to embrace diverse forms of expression through dance, future events are expected to draw even larger crowds. The ongoing dedication to celebrating culture through performance promises an exciting future for both participants and audiences alike.
