Inter Miami signs Casemiro
Inter Miami has announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, formerly of Manchester United. The deal is set to run until the conclusion of the 2027 MLS campaign, with an option to extend the contract through June 2029. Casemiro, who is 34, departed Manchester United at the end of last season.
This move marks a new chapter for the midfielder, who expressed his motivation for winning and continued growth. He stated that the project presented by the club, along with the effort made to bring him to Miami, was significant to him. Casemiro also conveyed his gratitude and eagerness to contribute both during matches and in training.
At Inter Miami, Casemiro is expected to reunite with former Real Madrid and Manchester United teammate Sergio Reguilon. He will also join Argentina‘s World Cup finalists Lionel Messi and Rodrigo de Paul.
Tampering allegations under review
Following the announcement of Casemiro’s signing, Major League Soccer (MLS) initiated an investigation into allegations of tampering against Inter Miami. The league released a statement indicating it is “reviewing a tampering allegation” concerning the club and is gathering all relevant information. Further comments will be withheld until the review is complete.
The investigation focuses on Casemiro’s discovery rights, an MLS regulation that grants a specific club the first opportunity to sign a player if they wish to join the league. Los Angeles Galaxy held the discovery rights for Casemiro, but Inter Miami stated they had acquired these rights from the Galaxy when announcing the player’s transfer.
This is not the first instance of Inter Miami facing scrutiny over transfer dealings. In 2021, the club was fined for violating MLS rules during the signing of French midfielder Blaise Matuidi from Juventus the previous year. The MLS determined that Matuidi had been paid more than permitted, effectively giving the team four “designated players” instead of the allowed three. Designated players’ wages do not count towards the MLS salary cap, a rule often referred to as the ‘Beckham rule’ after Sir David Beckham joined Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.
Casemiro’s career before Miami
Casemiro announced in January that he would leave Old Trafford at the end of the 2026-27 season, a decision made mutually not to renew his contract. He spent four years at Manchester United, making 160 appearances, scoring 26 goals, and providing 14 assists. During his time with United, he won one EFL Cup and one FA Cup. He scored in the League Cup final victory in 2023 and reached two FA Cup finals, winning the competition in 2024. He was also part of the United side that reached the Europa League final in May 2025.
Before his move to United in 2022, Casemiro secured five Champions League titles with Real Madrid. He also represented Brazil, helping his national team reach the last 16 at this summer’s World Cup. His final season at United saw a resurgence in his performance, particularly in front of goal, where he scored nine times, including five goals in 15 games under Michael Carrick.
In the wake of Casemiro’s departure, Manchester United have focused on strengthening their midfield. They have acquired Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa during this transfer window.
Inter Miami co-owner Sir David Beckham expressed his delight about Casemiro joining the club, highlighting his achievements and winning mentality from his time with Real Madrid and Manchester United.
