Justice Mohamed Abdulahi Warsame has been nominated for the position of Supreme Court judge by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) in Kenya. This nomination follows a competitive recruitment process to fill the vacancy left by the late Justice Mohammed Kadhar Ibrahim, who passed away in December 2025.

The JSC received six applications and shortlisted five candidates for the Supreme Court judge position. The nomination process was publicly conducted and broadcast live. Chief Justice Martha Koome stated that Justice Warsame demonstrated the qualities required of a Supreme Court judge.

Justice Warsame has served as a Court of Appeal Judge since 2012. He holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) from the University of Nairobi and a Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law. The appointment is pending formal approval from President William Ruto, with an announcement expected via a Gazette Notice.

Key facts:

  • The JSC has appointed 52 judges across superior courts this year, marking the largest expansion in Kenya’s judicial history.
  • The JSC emphasized the importance of public participation and transparency in its processes.
  • Chief Justice Koome expressed confidence in Justice Warsame’s capabilities, stating his depth of legal knowledge and breadth of life experience make him well suited for this role.

Justice Warsame remarked, “I have never in my duty gone against the will of the Chief Justice, having worked with four Chief Justices.” His nomination is part of broader efforts to strengthen Kenya’s judiciary.
