Spain secures top spot in Group H

Spain has advanced to the last 32 of the FIFA World Cup as group winners, following a victory over Uruguay. The European champions were largely assured of progression before the match, but a late first-half goal from Alex Baena confirmed their top position in Group H. This result means Spain will now face the runners-up from Group J.

The match saw Spain take the lead in the 42nd minute. After withstanding a period of pressure from Uruguay, Baena scored with a low shot that eluded goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Despite Muslera getting two hands on the ball, it squirmed over him and into the net. This marked a significant moment in the game, shifting momentum in Spain’s favour.

This win also marks the first time Spain has secured two victories in a World Cup tournament since their successful campaign in 2010 when they won the competition. Substitute Ferran Torres also hit the crossbar late in the game, as Spain maintained control to secure their second win.

Uruguay’s early exit from the tournament

Uruguay has been eliminated from the World Cup group stage for the second consecutive time. Their defeat to Spain, combined with previous results, left them with two points from three games, insufficient for progression. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has now failed to advance from the group stage in two of his three World Cup campaigns, having also experienced this with Argentina in 2002.

A key moment for Uruguay occurred when midfielder Agustin Canobbio received a red card in stoppage time. This was for a high challenge on Pau Cubarsi, further compounding Uruguay’s difficult night. Earlier in the match, Uruguay expressed dissatisfaction when their opponents did not put the ball out of play after Manuel Ugarte went down with what appeared to be an innocuous challenge, leading to Spain’s goal.

Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera was substituted at half-time, replaced by Sergio Rochet. This change came after Muslera’s error led to Spain’s opening goal, marking his third such error in as many games. Despite the change and a late push, Uruguay struggled to seriously test Spain’s goalkeeper, Unai Simon. Former Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, who was in the starting lineup, missed two opportunities shortly after the first-half hydration break.

Cape Verde secures knockout stage spot

In another Group H match, Cape Verde secured their place in the last 32 after a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia. This result sparked jubilation among Cape Verde’s players and fans. Cape Verde had previously drawn with Spain in their opening game and then secured a 2-2 draw against Uruguay, with Hélio Varela scoring an equaliser after coming off the bench.

The draw means Cape Verde could become one of the few African nations to remain unbeaten in the group stages during their debut World Cup appearance. They also had a significant chance to score against Saudi Arabia, with Laros Duarte’s one-on-one opportunity being saved by goalkeeper Al-Owais. Saudi Arabia, despite making late substitutions, could not find a goal to prolong their stay in the tournament.

The Opta supercomputer had rated Cape Verde as slight favourites for the match against Saudi Arabia, with a 38.0% win probability compared to Saudi Arabia’s 35.8%. Cape Verde faced 44 shots across their first two games but only nine were on target. This marks the first time Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia have faced each other in a World Cup fixture.
