Alonso’s vision for new Chelsea signings
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has shared his strategy for integrating new signing Morgan Rogers and existing player Cole Palmer into the squad for the upcoming season. Rogers recently joined Chelsea from Aston Villa for a club-record fee of £117 million, signing an initial six-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso expressed his approval of Rogers’ acquisition during a press conference, highlighting the need for an important player in that position. He stated that there were few better options than Rogers and that his arrival means a lot for the club and the current players.
Alonso has been following Rogers’ progress in the Premier League during his previous managerial roles at Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid. He noted Rogers’ flexibility as a key quality, mentioning his ability to play in the pocket position near the striker or number 10, as well as on the right side, often coming in from the left.

Rogers’ preferred area of operation is the left pocket in the final third, though his versatility to occupy other areas of the pitch is seen as beneficial. Last season, Rogers recorded 10 goals and contributed seven assists in 37 Premier League appearances for Aston Villa.
Palmer, another attacking midfielder at Chelsea, also thrives in a similar pocket position, primarily on the right side of the pitch. Alonso described both Rogers and Palmer as “special players” and indicated he has a specific plan for them to link up effectively.
Alonso emphasised the importance of achieving a good mix and balance, positioning these special players correctly with control to enhance the team’s competitiveness both with and without the ball.
Financial aspects of Rogers’ transfer
The transfer of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea involved a British-record fee of £117 million. This figure represents the initial payment, but the overall financial commitment for Chelsea is expected to be significantly higher.
Beyond the upfront transfer fee, Chelsea will also incur costs related to agents involved in the deal. These fees are typically a percentage of the deal’s value, and Chelsea has historically been a significant spender on agent fees since the BlueCo takeover in 2022.

Additionally, transfers between Premier League clubs are subject to a transfer levy. Rogers’ move from Aston Villa, a fellow league club, would incur this charge.
Wages also form a substantial part of the financial commitment. Rogers is expected to earn a minimum weekly wage, with potential increases through individual and team performance-related bonuses and other clauses. His contract is for six years, with an option to extend for an additional 12 months. Image rights also contribute to the total value of a player’s contract, typically representing a percentage of the overall amount. Employer National Insurance further adds to the costs for Chelsea.
Rogers’ arrival and pre-season plans
Rogers’ signing has generated considerable attention, following his participation in the 2026 World Cup with England, where he played in most of the team’s matches. Due to his involvement in the tournament, Rogers is currently on downtime.
He is anticipated to join his new Chelsea teammates after the club’s tour of Australia and Asia. In contrast, Cole Palmer is part of the club’s pre-season squad and is expected to participate in Chelsea’s first friendly of the tour against Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday, July 28.

Alonso expressed his eagerness to work with Rogers, noting that he believes Rogers will adapt quickly to the club, system, and teammates. He views Rogers as a top player who can make an almost instant impact.
The manager highlighted Rogers’ flexibility as a strong attribute, mentioning his comfort in the pocket position near the striker or number 10, as well as playing on the right side, often cutting in from the left. Alonso believes that establishing good connections between players like Rogers and others will be a significant step forward in the team’s quality of play.
