Tournament Format and Qualification
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is progressing through its group stage, with the knockout rounds set to commence. This edition of the tournament is notable for its expanded format, featuring 48 teams. Out of these, 32 teams will advance to the next phase of the competition. The qualification structure dictates that the top two teams from each of the 12 groups will automatically secure a spot in the Round of 32. Additionally, the eight best third-placed teams across all groups will also qualify, filling the remaining spots in the knockout stage.
The criteria for determining the eight best third-placed teams involve several factors. These teams are ranked based on the points accumulated in all their group matches. If teams are level on points, goal difference from all group matches is the next tie-breaker, followed by the number of goals scored in all group matches. Further tie-breaking criteria include Fair Play, which considers the number of yellow and red cards received, and as a last resort, the FIFA ranking from the June update is applied.
The knockout phase itself begins with the Round of 32, a new addition following the tournament’s expansion. This will be followed by the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a playoff for third place. The final match of the tournament is scheduled for July 19.

Several teams have made their mark, with some debutants progressing to the knockout rounds. Mexico, as co-hosts, were the first nation to qualify and won Group A with a perfect record. They are set to host a third-placed team from Group C, E, F, H, or I in the Round of 32 on Tuesday, with Ecuador being a likely opponent. South Africa also advanced, securing second place in Group A after defeating South Korea 1-0. They will face Canada in Los Angeles on Monday.
Switzerland topped Group B with seven points and will play a third-placed team in Vancouver on Thursday, July 2. Canada finished as runners-up in Group B and will meet South Africa. Bosnia-Herzegovina, after beating Qatar 3-1, finished third in Group B with four points and will face the United States in the Round of 32.
In Group C, five-time winners Brazil secured the top spot on goal difference with seven points, following a 3-0 victory over Scotland. They are scheduled to play Group F runners-up Japan in Houston on Monday. Morocco also advanced in second place with seven points and will face the Netherlands in Monterrey on Monday. Scotland, with three points and a goal difference of -3, are currently unlikely to progress as one of the best third-placed teams.
The United States qualified as Group D winners and will play Bosnia-Herzegovina in Santa Clara on Wednesday. Australia, with four points, also progressed after a goalless draw against Paraguay and will face Egypt. Paraguay, also on four points, are set to play Germany in Boston on Monday.
Germany, who had already won Group E on head-to-head record, will face Paraguay. Ivory Coast secured second place in Group E and will play Norway. Ecuador finished third in Group E with four points and are guaranteed to be one of the best third-placed teams, likely playing Mexico.
The Netherlands secured top spot in Group F and will play Morocco. Japan and Sweden both progressed to the Round of 32, with Japan taking second place to play Brazil, and Sweden facing France in New Jersey on Tuesday.
Belgium claimed top spot in Group G and will face a third-place finisher in Seattle on Wednesday, July 1. Egypt finished second and will play Australia. Iran, with three points, finished third and awaits confirmation on their progression. In Group H, Spain secured top spot and will face the runner-up of Group J. Cape Verde secured second place and will face Argentina. Uruguay finished third with two points, which was not enough to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams.
France secured top spot in Group I with nine points and will play Sweden. Norway finished second and will take on Ivory Coast. Senegal finished third with three points and a +2 goal difference, making them one of the eight best third-placed teams. Argentina have topped Group J and will face Cape Verde. Austria and Algeria are tied on three points and will play on Sunday, with Algeria needing a win to progress automatically. Colombia has secured a top two spot in Group K and will win the group if they avoid defeat against Portugal on Sunday. Portugal needs a win to finish first, while a draw would secure second place. A win for DR Congo would put them on four points, likely enough for third place. England is assured of progressing at least in third place in Group L and faces Panama in their final game on Saturday.
