The principal of Alliance Girls High School faces disciplinary action after a more than 100% unauthorized fee hike sparked investigations and complaints from parents. The school raised its fees from Ksh.53,558 to Ksh.120,179 without approval from the Ministry of Education.
The increase in fees has led to significant backlash. Parents reported that the fee hike was not authorized, prompting Julius Ogamba from the Ministry of Education to state, “We received a lot of complaints from parents of Alliance Girls that the school fees had been raised to Ksh.120,000 and this was not authorised.” The Ministry confirmed the unauthorized fee increase through its investigation.
Principal Margaret Njeru endorsed a budget that included non-essential expenditures. This budget allocated Ksh.25,000,000 for a staff trip to Dubai among other questionable spending items totaling millions of shillings.
The Board of Management has been recommended for dissolution due to approving this disputed budget. Ogamba criticized the board’s failure in financial management, saying, “The Board of Management failed in its duty to guide on prudent management of financial resources.”
Other budget items included Ksh.16,000,000 for annual trips and Ksh.1,100,000 for moral and spiritual activities.
The Ministry has directed that findings be presented to the County Education Board for further action. Observers expect further developments as the investigation continues and additional details emerge regarding the financial management practices at the school.
