British Tennis Stars Suffer Injury Setbacks
Wimbledon has seen a challenging start for British tennis, with both Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper withdrawing from the tournament due to injuries. Their withdrawals occurred on Day 1, marking a difficult period for the nation’s tennis hopes at the prestigious event. Neither player was able to compete on the grass courts, a situation that has become a recurring theme for both athletes over the past year.
Raducanu’s withdrawal was attributed to a stress fracture in her right leg. This news followed her being seen in a walking boot in the week prior to the tournament. Despite efforts to manage the injury, it reportedly worsened, leading to medical advice to cease pushing through the discomfort. She expressed her devastation, stating she had done everything possible to reach the starting line but a final scan revealed the stress fracture.
Draper, who had been working with Andy Murray on grass courts this season, also pulled out of the competition. His injury was identified as a recurrence of an arm issue, specifically bone bruising in his left arm. This setback comes after he had recently made a semifinal appearance on grass in Eastbourne, an event he hoped would prepare him for a strong showing at Wimbledon.
Draper’s Recurring Injury Woes
For Jack Draper, the arm injury is a familiar challenge. It appears to be a recurrence of the issue that cut his 2025 season short. That previous injury involved bone bruising in his left humerus, which he began his comeback from in February. After playing nine matches, he then sustained a tendon injury in his right knee during a tournament in Barcelona this spring. He only recently returned to competitive play, participating in four matches at Eastbourne.
Draper was scheduled to face Taylor Fritz in the first round of Wimbledon. His withdrawal means that Fritz will now play against Dusan Lajovic, a lucky loser from qualifying. Draper described this withdrawal as the “absolute worst” of many painful moments he has experienced over the last 12 months, highlighting the significance of playing at Wimbledon for a British player.
The 24-year-old has faced a difficult year marked by injuries, limiting him to just 13 matches on the ATP Tour. As a result, his ranking has slipped to 131st in the ATP rankings. The arm injury first emerged before his 2025 US Open second-round match, sidelining him for the remainder of that year. He also missed the Australian Open this year but returned for the Davis Cup qualifiers in February before the knee issue forced him to miss most of the clay-court season. He had hoped to make a strong return at Wimbledon, aiming to build on his semifinal appearance at Flushing Meadows in 2024.

Impact on British Hopes and Replacements
The absence of both Raducanu and Draper leaves British tennis without two of its most prominent title hopefuls at Wimbledon. Both players are considered highly marketable stars for the nation, and their inability to compete on home soil is a significant blow to the tournament’s local interest.
Emma Raducanu, a former US Open champion, has been replaced in the draw by Darja Semenistaja of Latvia. Jack Draper’s spot in the draw will be taken by Dusan Lajovic. The withdrawals underscore the persistent injury challenges faced by both athletes, who have spent a considerable portion of the last year battling various physical setbacks.
Draper’s statement conveyed his devastation, emphasizing that there is no greater honour for a British player than competing at Wimbledon. He expressed his commitment to persevere through his injury challenges. The 24-year-old will now focus on recovery, with hopes of returning to his best form in time for the US Open.
The injuries have prevented both players from showcasing their talents at one of the sport’s most prestigious events, leaving fans to hope for their healthy return to the court in future tournaments.
