United States President Donald Trump has commented on England’s tactics during their World Cup semi-final loss to Argentina, specifically questioning Harry Kane’s defensive positioning in the second half. This follows criticism from pundits and supporters regarding manager Thomas Tuchel’s second-half substitutions after Argentina scored two late goals to secure a spot in the final against Spain.
Reports indicated that several key players were disappointed with the instructions given to finish the game, especially after England had taken the lead through Anthony Gordon. Tuchel reportedly shifted to a back five and introduced several defensive-minded substitutions in the latter stages of the match, which coincided with Lionel Messi inspiring a comeback for Argentina.
Trump’s comments on Kane and Balogun
During a reception at Trump Tower, President Trump remarked on Kane’s role. He stated, “You have a great player in England who I’ve played golf with. And he is Harry [Kane] who has been fantastic.” He added, “I think they perhaps made a mistake when they made him a defensive player. What do I know about soccer? They took the lead, and they took their best player and put him on defence.” Trump also acknowledged his limited knowledge of football coaching by saying, “But no, I’m not going to call it, what do I know about coaching?”
Trump also discussed his involvement in the review of USA striker Folarin Balogun’s suspension. Balogun was initially set to miss his team’s last-16 match against Belgium after receiving a straight red card for a foul against Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic. FIFA later suspended the automatic one-match ban, a decision that drew criticism.
The President recounted a conversation with FIFA president Gianni Infantino, stating, “I said ‘Gianni, I’d like to make a recommendation. Let the guy in the game!’ No, I didn’t say that. I said I’d like to wage a complaint.” He further commented on the outcome, “And actually I had no idea what was going to happen, but you know it is so much better the way it worked out because there is no controversy. [Belgium] won the game and our team had all of its players.”
World Cup success and controversies
Trump thanked Infantino and described the World Cup, co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada, as “the most successful sporting event, maybe in the history of the world.” Infantino echoed this sentiment, stating the tournament had “exceeded expectations” and that “the American dream, Mr President, came to reality. We united the world in America.” He further described it as “the greatest human, social and cultural event that mankind has ever witnessed.”
However, Trump’s comments regarding Balogun’s red card reversal could fuel ongoing controversy. Infantino had previously denied that Trump’s lobbying influenced the decision, asserting the independence of FIFA’s disciplinary committee. Trump’s latest remarks may reinforce suspicions of political interference affecting the integrity of the competition and could deepen a crisis of trust.
The relationship between Trump and Infantino, highlighted by their public appearances, has been noted by critics who argue it could undermine FIFA’s commitment to political neutrality. Despite this, both leaders point to record ticket sales and strong television audiences in the US for the expanded tournament, which has also been praised for its drama, excitement, and successful security plans.
Concerns have been raised regarding the financial costs for fans, leading to questions about FIFA’s revenue generation. Additionally, the introduction of hydration breaks, an expanded half-time break in the final, and discussions about further expansion to 64 teams have been met with dismay by some traditionalists, who fear increased commercialisation of the event.
Early in the tournament, various visa-related controversies affected fans, teams, and officials due to US foreign and immigration policies. This led to claims that Infantino had lost control of the tournament and faced criticism for advising critics to “chill and relax.” Despite these challenges, Infantino appeared confident in his position alongside Trump, with FIFA predicted to achieve significant financial success.
Infantino retains considerable support globally, as many countries rely on FIFA’s financial contributions for game development, making his re-election next year seem likely.
