CAF to consider tournament expansion

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is scheduled to convene its Executive Committee next week to deliberate on a proposal that could lead to an expansion of the number of clubs participating in the CAF Champions League and the CAF Confederation Cup. This discussion offers renewed hope for clubs like Shooting Stars, who could potentially secure a spot in Africa’s premier club competition despite their domestic league finish.

The proposal, formally submitted by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), requests an increase in the number of participating clubs in both inter-club competitions. This initiative aims to broaden representation and offer more opportunities for clubs across the continent to compete at the continental level. The EFA’s request is expected to be a significant item on the agenda during the upcoming CAF Executive Committee meeting.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe has previously shown an openness to considering proposals from member associations, suggesting that this request will be closely watched by clubs throughout Africa. Should the proposal gain approval, it could significantly alter the structure of CAF’s club competitions, potentially enhancing the competitiveness of both tournaments by allowing more teams to participate.

Implications for Nigerian and Egyptian clubs

For Nigerian clubs, an approved expansion could mean a chance for teams like Shooting Stars to feature in the CAF Champions League. The Ibadan-based club concluded the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League season in third place. While Rangers and Rivers United secured Nigeria’s two CAF Champions League berths, and Shooting Stars qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup, an expansion could still open a pathway for them into the top-tier competition.

In Egypt, the possibility of increased qualification spots has generated considerable discussion. Ahmed Suleiman, a board member for Zamalek, has expressed his preference for rivals Al Ahly not to compete in the next season’s CAF Champions League. Suleiman believes that Al Ahly’s absence would enhance Zamalek’s prospects of winning the continental title, acknowledging Al Ahly’s strength as a team.

Suleiman’s comments underscore the intense rivalry between Egypt’s leading clubs. He clarified that his stance is driven by sporting ambition, aiming for the clearest path to winning a major trophy. He stated that he would prefer not to face a strong team like Al Ahly in the competition, just as he would prefer if Wydad Casablanca were not participating.

Debate over competition regulations

The debate surrounding Al Ahly’s potential participation has intensified following reports of the Egyptian Football Association’s request for more CAF Champions League places. Despite these discussions, no official confirmation has been made regarding any changes to the allocation of spots. Suleiman argued that the competition should maintain its established system for the current cycle.

He suggested that any modifications to the system should be implemented in subsequent seasons, rather than during the ongoing qualification process. This perspective highlights a desire for consistency in tournament regulations. The issue has become a significant talking point in Egyptian football as clubs await clarity on the final qualification procedures.

Suleiman also addressed concerns about Zamalek’s club license, expressing confidence in the administrative process. He emphasized that regulations should be applied fairly to all clubs, indicating that if Zamalek were not to secure their license, he would accept another club taking their place. For now, the final composition of the next season’s CAF Champions League remains uncertain, with the CAF Executive Committee meeting set to discuss the proposal in the coming days.
