Guardiola’s potential return to management
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has confirmed discussions with Pep Guardiola regarding the vacant head coach position for the national team. Giovanni Malago, the president of the FIGC, stated that talks have been held with Guardiola, who recently concluded a 10-year tenure with Manchester City. Guardiola’s departure from City in May marked the end of a highly successful period, during which he secured six Premier League titles, three FA Cups, five League Cups, and the Champions League.
The Italian national team has been without a head coach since Gennaro Gattuso resigned in April. This resignation followed the team’s failure to qualify for a third consecutive World Cup. The FIGC is reportedly willing to make “exceptional” adjustments to their budget to secure Guardiola’s appointment, indicating the significance they place on bringing him in.
The ‘Azzurro project’ and other candidates
FIGC officials Paolo Maldini and Leonardo met with Guardiola in Barcelona, presenting a comprehensive vision known as the ‘Azzurro project’. This initiative aims for a complete overhaul of Italian football, extending beyond the senior national team to include all other national teams. The proposal seeks to rebuild Italian football on robust foundations, with Guardiola envisioned as a central figure in this extensive restructuring.
Guardiola, who speaks fluent Italian and previously played in Serie A for two seasons between 2001 and 2003 with spells at Brescia and Roma, has expressed interest in international management. He previously stated that he would not have the energy to manage another club team immediately after City, but a national team role could be different. Guardiola is now considering the offer from the FIGC.
While Guardiola is a prominent candidate, he is not the only one being considered for the role. Other individuals reportedly in contention include former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who led Italy to victory in Euro 2020, and former midfielder Andrea Pirlo, who currently manages Dubai United. Malago confirmed that these names fit the desired profile for the position, but stressed they are not the only candidates.
Guardiola’s post-City reflections and international management appeal
Upon leaving Manchester City, Guardiola indicated a desire to take a break from football. He cited feeling “so tired” and wanting to spend more time with his family as key reasons for his decision. He mentioned that he would not have the energy for the daily demands of club management, especially the expectations to consistently compete for titles.
However, the prospect of international management presents a different challenge. This type of role would allow Guardiola to engage with football periodically, such as during Euros or World Cup cycles, while also affording him more personal time. This balance could be particularly appealing for someone who has achieved significant success in club football and is looking for a new type of challenge.
Historically, Italy’s men’s national team has almost exclusively been managed by Italians, with only two exceptions: Hungarian Lajos Czeizler in the 1950s and Argentine Helenio Herrera in the following decade. The potential appointment of Guardiola would mark a notable deviation from this tradition. The FIGC’s engagement with Guardiola underscores their commitment to revitalising the national team after its recent struggles in World Cup qualification.
The Italian Football Federation is awaiting Guardiola’s response to their offer, which includes a vision for a comprehensive overhaul of Italian football.
