Tottenham secures Mateus Fernandes

Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly reached an agreement to acquire midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United. The deal is understood to be valued at £85 million, a figure that would exceed the club’s previous transfer record. Fernandes has been granted permission to undergo a medical examination with Spurs.

Manchester United also pursued Fernandes, but reports indicate they were not prepared to meet the £85 million valuation. United’s approach prioritises players who genuinely wish to join the club and values transfers at what they consider the appropriate price. Fernandes’ preference was not consistently clear during the negotiation process.

Decision-makers at West Ham reportedly view Fernandes as one of the top young talents in the Premier League from the recent season. They believe he possesses the potential to develop into a player of similar calibre to Declan Rice, who was transferred to Arsenal in 2023.

Fernandes’ impact and playing style

Fernandes was a notable performer for West Ham during the 2025-26 campaign, making 36 league appearances, scoring three goals and providing four assists. He joined West Ham from Southampton for around £38m in August 2025, and his West Ham contract has another four years to run.

His playing style is characterised by tough tackling and high-intensity running. According to Simon Rusk, who previously worked with Fernandes at Southampton, his strong tackling statistics are not surprising. Fernandes has also been noted for covering significant distances in matches, placing him among the top Premier League midfielders in this regard.

Initially, Fernandes was utilised in a more advanced role at Southampton. However, he expressed a preference for an all-round midfield role, specifically as a number eight. This position allows him to engage in both defensive and offensive aspects of the game, leveraging his desire to be actively involved and his strong engine.

West Ham also observed this preference, primarily deploying him in a hybrid role between a number six and a number eight during the past season. This shift allowed him to further develop his game intelligence, combining it with his strength and tenacity.

Tottenham’s transfer strategy

The potential acquisition of Fernandes would mark a significant move for Tottenham, signalling a new era in their transfer market activity. The club’s previous record signing was for Dominic Solanke in August 2024. This move suggests a more assertive approach in securing key targets.

If completed, Fernandes will become Spurs’ fourth signing of the summer, with Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi arriving as free agents and Jan Paul van Hecke joining from Brighton & Hove Albion for £52m. He would join a midfield group that includes players such as Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall. Yves Bissouma is set to leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Spurs reportedly faced creativity issues last season, partly due to injuries to players like James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski.

Fernandes made his senior international debut in April 2026. A move to Spurs would see him join his third English club in the last two years, having previously played for Southampton after arriving from Sporting CP in 2024. He made appearances for Southampton before their relegation at the end of that season.
