Ronald Koeman has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Netherlands national team. This marks his second departure from the role, following the team’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup. The Oranje were knocked out by Morocco in a penalty shootout after their last 32 match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time in Monterrey.

The Netherlands had advanced to the last 32 after topping Group F in the 2026 World Cup. Their group stage performance included a 5-1 victory over Sweden. In the match against Morocco, Koeman’s squad was moments away from securing a spot in the last 16 before Issa Diop scored an injury-time equaliser, sending the game into extra time and eventually penalties.

Post-Match Reactions and Tactical Discussions

The decisive match saw Cody Gakpo open the scoring for the Netherlands in the 72nd minute. However, Diop’s header in the 91st minute forced the game into an additional period. Morocco ultimately prevailed in the penalty shootout, winning 3-2 after the Netherlands missed three spot-kicks.

Following the defeat, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk offered his perspective on the team’s performance. Speaking to NOS immediately after the final whistle, van Dijk described the match as intense. He noted that despite registering only two shots on target throughout the 120 minutes, he believed the team was defensively solid. Van Dijk stated that Morocco struggled to find space between the lines, suggesting that the team’s game plan had worked defensively.

Van Dijk also addressed the tactical approach, which saw the Oranje deploy a five-man defensive line, a setup not used in their previous 32 matches. He argued that a deeper block is a tactical necessity for elite nations in modern tournaments. He mentioned that the team had trained extensively on this approach for two days, and it had been effective at times. When asked about the emotional impact of the shootout, van Dijk described it as intense, acknowledging the disappointment of being eliminated despite the training involved.

The captain also expressed his desire to be with his teammates following the loss, stating his only thought at that moment was to get inside and be with the boys. The defeat marked an unwanted repeat of history for the Dutch squad, as it was the first time since Euro 2000 that they had lost three competitive penalty shootouts.

Koeman’s Decision and Previous Tenure

Koeman’s decision to leave his role was communicated through a statement issued by the Dutch Football Federation on Instagram. In his statement, Koeman explained that the decision was not easy, given his close and intensive work with the coaching staff and players over an extended period. He expressed gratitude and appreciation for the dedication shown by everyone involved with the Oranje during both of his tenures as head coach.

Koeman cited personal reasons for his departure, stating that he believes now is the right time to spend more time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He described it as the right and most natural decision for him at this moment. His previous stint as head coach of the Netherlands was between February 2018 and August 2020, before he moved to manage Barcelona.

The outcome of the match against Morocco also prompted a change of opinion from former Dutch international Rafael van der Vaart. Prior to the game, van der Vaart had confidently predicted a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Netherlands, citing the individual quality of Dutch players. However, after Morocco’s victory, he acknowledged their dominance. Speaking on the Dutch network NOS, van der Vaart stated that Morocco fully deserved to qualify and were the better team from the first minute. He expressed deep disappointment with the Dutch national team’s performance, noting that despite taking the lead, Morocco was simply the superior side. He also singled out De Jong’s performance, describing it as the worst he had seen from the player, and attributed it to Morocco’s superior midfield.
